I always wondered if Steve would bring any fans with him into the world of dp. Reading what have been written above I can see that he didn't bring that many....
I never heard of him before he joined. emoticon

I was a little surprised when he joined Purple but I wanted Joe to stay.
I had 75% of Steves work and I knew he would be doing something to break out of his
situation and go global,I just never thought it would be in my favorite band.
Once I heard Purpendicular I was satsfied.
MrSnip mentioned the webcast on liveconcerts.com,that was in 2000 way after
he joined Purple. Are we not talking priors here?

Also Steve was the first to have instructional tapes, not videos but actual cassette tapes, they were made by Hot Licks long before they got in to the VHS market, I think in about '78, I bet there worth something now.

I knew of his work with Kansas + the Dixie Dregs...didn't care to own any of it, though.
As was said, I was also pretty surprised when he was announced as Purple's new guitarist. I too had held out hope that somehow it would be worked out that Satriani would be able to accept the gig on a full time basis. emoticon

I was a Deep Purple fan first, but before I heard him play with Deep Purple, I already knew Steve Morse (I only had a few of his records though).

Too boring. The same soloes as he uses today.

Sadly you're right about that !

Around 80'- 82' I heard SM on vinyl for the first time, I was stunned ...
did not really like his music but damn that was one hell of an listening experince at the time ...
Today I'm 'forced' to listen to his crappy solos because they happen to be in the middle of the songs performed by my favourite band emoticon

People tend to call 'ol Ritchie Blockhead a recycler, well at least RBs got a personality emoticon

I get pretty bored myself(sometimes)listening to the same damn melody repeated on atlest two songs(sometimes more)an album from Blckmores Night.
(to think he and Candice call them MOLODIES)
How many songs can he build around that sme exact melody??
Another example is Spotlight Kid/
Dead Or Alive/A twist In The Tale, same riff recycled over and over...shall I go on with the L.A. Connections and such??? emoticon

The Introduction was The Steve Morse Band's debut in 1984. His first solo album was 1989's High Tension Wires. He also guested on Triumph's Surveillance album in 1986 trading leads with Rik Emmett on Play with the Fire. The highlight of that album.
He's been on Steve Walsh's (Kansas lead singer) solo albums as well.
I was surprised he joined Purple but I knew he was a tremendous player. From the first time I heard the intro to Cruise Missle on The Introduction I was a fan. He's definately a musician's musician that ranks among the likes of Satriani and Vai-virtuosos.
If anything I would say he brought newer players to appreciate Deep Purple. I often talk to guitar players who are familiar with Steve and don't know DP is still together. Then when I tell them Steve's been in the band for a decade they're surprised. (I then feel obligated to burn them a CD to educate them).

Steve was certainly well known with guitar players and musicians from back when the Dregs were getting started. He gained much more exposure once he joined Kansas, even if Kansas was clearly on the downslide. Steve joining Purple was a surprise, because I never thought he would want to play heavy rock. But when you think about it there are not many heavy rock bands looking for a solid lead guitarst anymore.
