Re: HTP 1 or Black Sabbath's Born Again?
Eternal Idol...you're kidding right?!?
Get both Born Again and HTP.Too different to be compared or to be missing one of the two.Although I would start with Born Again

Sabbath's "Born Again". Easy choice, at least for me, between the two offered.

Yes Eternal Idol...as opposed to
Seventh Star only, otherwise not much going on there.
Hard drugs and mass alcahol did nothing but make Glenn Hughes even MORE irratic than ever, don't you know why he's singing better than ever now?
He's been on the wagon for years and it show's in his singing and performing
big time.

Re: HTP 1 or Black Sabbath's Born Again?
I'm in the minority here, but definitely HTP. Chock full of great songs, and superb vocals by both JLT and Glenn plus an absolutely heroic performance by Vince DiColla (keyboards).
Born Again is an aberration, doesn't match up to either the preceding Dio era or the Hughes/Martin eras that followed (IMO). Appalling production, disastrous cover and some pretty duff songs on it. Gillan's lyrics are far from his best too (Digital !@#$ - ouch!). I heard most of the album when it first came out, didn't bother buying it. Finally bought it a year or so ago after some glowing comments here and I'm afraid time hasn't helped.
*waits for the flames*
(why isn't this in the Purple Discussions section?)

Re: HTP 1 or Black Sabbath's Born Again?
You obviously don't prefere Gillan Bigj
it's very evident.
When you don't get into his outside work
at the time it's happening he's even harder to get into,if you have retrospect then atleast you can compare him later with
dignity.I'm not saying I think you think
he's lousey or anything, you just lean toward a different side of the Purple style.
Thats your opinion and it's okay with me,
BA is Gillan at his warts and all best
and probably not slick enough for you.
There's nothing wrong with that,he's a bit rough and you like things a bit smoother I take it.
You actually have the best of both worlds cause myself I can't get into HTP or Whitesnake enough to praise them for what they are really worth but I do think they aren't bad, just not that good, atleast you like Gillan enough not to slag him the way I do Coverdale, so good going man.
Your very nice about the whole thing
my friend.
And you don't slag Gillan like some others here, you just tell it from the heart.

Re: HTP 1 or Black Sabbath's Born Again?
Gillan is great, I just don't hold him in the same God-like category as some others do. He's sung some awesome stuff, which 99% of other singers could only dream about (Fighting Man, Child In Time, Gethsemane, Highway Star, Men Of War, etc). I don't feel that Born Again is his finest hour though, although the vocals are far and away the best thing about the whole album.

But if we talk about about Heavy Metal singing performances (like Dio or Halford style) I believe that IG performance in BA is a excelent Classic Heavy Metal performance. In Digital !@#$, Hot Line and DTP he sings like the devil IMO.
To me BA is a great Heavy Metal album (as Number of the Beast,Heaven and Hell, Master of Puppets), but not a classic Black Sabbath album (as Paranoid, Vol.4, HaH, Master of Reality).
btw i agreed that it should be at Purple discussion, great topic this one, starts with a simple question and is growing very well itself

Re: HTP 1 or Black Sabbath's Born Again?
The opener on Born Again all by itself is worth getting the album. Trashed is one of the heaviest songs Gillan has ever performed.
The remaster job is pretty good as well.
HTP 1 is a must have as well. It's a 2003 release of material that sounds like it came from the 1980's hard rock era. Killer keyboards and guitar work with a definite Purple sound.

Re: HTP 1 or Black Sabbath's Born Again?
The BA remaster is definetly a noticable improvement on the origonal and just goes to prove that origonals aren't ALWAYS the best.
