I think St Holmes was brought in as a result of this, to try and bolster things in the vocal department. He only lasted for the UK tour and a few European dates, although I think that he may have added some vocals to an American re-mix of Built To Destroy also. As I said, I saw this line-up live and I don't think Schenker really made enough use of him onstage. He could have carried off the lead singer role himself, but was reduced to guitar / backing vocals. He took lead on Still Love That Little Devil (from memory).nondisclosed_email@example.com (Big J)Sun, 08 Aug 2004 05:34:12 +0000 Re: Glenn Hughes, Clear Lake, IA- July 30th 2004https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p14452,from=rss#post14452https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p14452,from=rss#post14452quote:Big J wrote: quote:Alistair Tait wrote: quote:Bud Abbott wrote: Wasn't Derek St. Holmes there as well? He also did an excellent job. He is nearly bald (what hair he has, he keeps trimmed very short) but looks like he keeps himself in great shape. He still looks like he's having fun on stage as well - not just going through the motions. For his last 2 songs, Carmine Appice & Tim Bogart (of Vanilla Fudge) joined him - was a helluva jam session! One of the two songs was "Stranglehold." nondisclosed_email@example.com (Sweathogs)Fri, 06 Aug 2004 17:27:48 +0000 Re: Glenn Hughes, Clear Lake, IA- July 30th 2004https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p14449,from=rss#post14449https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p14449,from=rss#post14449He may be a geezer at 51/52, but the guy can flat-out sing his ass off. They're a great band as well, if only a Hughes/Tesla bill toured the UK/Europe! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Christos Gatzidis)Sun, 01 Aug 2004 00:36:40 +0000 Glenn Hughes, Clear Lake, IA- July 30th 2004https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p14437,from=rss#post14437https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p14437,from=rss#post14437I saw Glenn Hughes at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa in the opening spot for a band called Tesla last night. My what difference a year makes. This was not the same atmosphere as I saw Glenn play last August. The mood was more of an actual concert that Glenn just happened to be at instead of a Tommy Bolin tribute night. I'll speak about the aforementioned atmosphere first. This year drew about twice as many people, making for a crowded and noisy little club. Most of the people at the show didn't seem to know who Tommy was at all, rather they were there to see Tesla. I congratulate the Bolin Foundation for pulling in a big act, but I feel the point was lost by doing so. Last year there was an opening act before Glenn, who then himself was an opener for Pat Travers. The mood was much more relaxed and friendly, as opposed to the chaotic drunken frenzy that I was in the midst of last night. First of all, my only interest in this show was to see Glenn play. I left before Tesla even took the stage. Last year there was a table that sold some Glenn Hughes cd's, unfortnately I didn't have enough cash on me to buy more than one last year. I was expecting the same kind of merchandise, so I brought a huge some of money to buy a lot of cd's, but alas, not a single cd at the table. After last year's show Glenn came out and met the fans, which I assume he does at most shows, but, yet again, no such luck. The place was about a half hour late opening the doors, and Glenn started about a half hour later then scheduled. I was standing in the very front of the stage. Right beside me was an old leathery skinned, foul smelling guy in short shorts who just happened to be drinking heavily. I put my hand on the front barricade, as it is nice to have something to hold onto during a general admission concert, and this guy started slapping at my hand and attempting to push me out of the way. Considering this fellow was about half my size made for an amuzing situation. I guess that's why they call it liquid courage. I just told him to mind his own business so I could enjoy the show. I must admit there is nothing finer than pukey beer breath right in your face. I'm not a violent guy and I didn't want to risk a confrontation that would get me booted from the show. Now onto the performance: Glenn came out and the show began with the crashing sounds of drum and guitar. Yes, he opened with STORMBRINGER! I must say Glenn handled the song very well. He screamed the "Time to Die" bit which was nice. The song was fantastic. I was becoming very excited for what would hopefully be an amazing show. Next up, much to my delight, I heard the organ play the intro to MIGHT JUST TAKE YOUR LIFE! Once again, I was stunned. Glenn did a fantastic job on this tune, pausing to allow the crowd to sing the chorus was a nice touch. Up next, Glenn introduced this one as a track from the Hughes/Thrall record. This one is called MUSCLE AND BLOOD. I've never heard the album before but this one was a nice heavy piece of work. Following Muscle and Blood was another Hughes/Thrall track called First Step of Love. I enjoyed both of these tracks, and I should probably pick that album up. Glenn then said he was doing a song from his new album. The song was called CAN'T STOP THE FLOOD. It was a nice rock song with a good sing a long chorus to it. After this song Glenn reacted to a drunklen fan by saying, "We sold 50 million records you F'ING idiot." I don't know if he was referring to Purple or what, but it was obvious that Glenn was not pleased. Up next Glenn introduced the tune as a song he wrote in 1970 at age 7. The song was MADUSA. I've never heard any of the Trapeze albums, and I must admit that this was the real shocker of the night. This song was very heavy yet very fantastic. I was very impressed with madusa. After a long workout of that song Glenn anounced that "This was the first song we had written for the Burn album." He said where they had gotten together to write it and stated, "For those of you who aren't familiar with Purple Ritchie Blackmore was actually in my band Deep Purple for a short while." I'm assuming most didn't take notice to the joke, but it was amusing. The song he was referring to was MISTREATED. I was incredibly impressed by the band's performance on this one, especially Glenn was on fine form. Up next, I could see Glenn mouthing something to the rest of the band, who appeared to be taken off guard. I was pretty sure what Glenn was saying, so I was getting very excited. The opening guitar riff sounded off and we were treated to BURN! This was very very wonderful to see live. My only complaint was that you could easily miss Jon Lord. The organ solo was very average and thus brought down the song a little. Burn without the great organ solo is like Highway Star without the guitar. After the song finished I couldn't imagine what would be next. I was becoming very excited, but as the song finished Glenn unplugged his bass and took off. There were no thank you's or any talk with the fans, he just left. I was assuming there would be some encores, like last year, but no, that was it! In total, Glenn played for about 45 minutes. Needless to say, I was rather disappointed. I drove a combined 8 hours and paid nearly $100 to see Glenn play for 45 minutes. Don't get me wrong, the set was wonderful, but only 45 minutes? I waited around for about 30 minutes for Glenn to come out and talk to the fans, but nothing. I can't express the frustration with it all, because I actually enjoyed his playing. The setlist: STORMBRINGER MIGHT JUST TAKE YOUR LIFE MUSCLE AND BLOOD FIRST STEP OF LOVE CAN'T STOP THE FLOOD MADUSA MISTREATED BURNnondisclosed_email@example.com (Super Trouper)Sat, 31 Jul 2004 21:10:22 +0000
