Kenny Aronoff Q&A

Brad asked:
Hey Kenny, thanks a lot for doing this.
I've got a couple questions for you.

1. Any news on the "Fused" tour with Tony and Glenn..If you know anything..please inform us! Were waiting for this one!

THERE IS NO NEWS YET ABOUT A TOUR WITH THE THREE OF US. WE ALL ARE EXCITED TO PLAY LIVE TOGETHER SOMETIME. WE REALLY ENJOYED RECORDING TOGETHER AND LIVE WOULD TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

2. You've played with so many people over the year and are featured on several albums per year...For example..I noticed you have drumming credits on Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson albums..Do you actually meet them or are you just handed the music and told to play. On average how many tracks do you play on for these albums?

BECAUSE OF SHRINKING RECORDING BUDGETS, I HAVE BEEN RECORDING A LOT OF RECORDS BY MYSELF. I COME TO THE STUDIO AND OVER DUB TO FINISHED TRACKS (ALANIS MORRISETTE, MICHELLE BRANCH, ASHLEE SIMPSON) OR OVER DUB TO DEMO TRACKS (ALICE COOPER, HILARY DUFF, AVRIL LAVIGNE). I USUALLY DO NOT MEET THE ARTISTS THESE DAYS. I LISTEN TO THE SONG I AM RECORDING, MAKE A CHART, PRACTICE THE BEATS AND ANY DIFFICULT PARTS, GET A GOOD HEAD PHONE MIX AND THEN START RECORDING. WHEN I RECORD WITH OTHER MUSICIANS LIVE ( TREY ANASTASSIO, MELISSA ETHERIDGE, JOHN FOGERTY, TONY IOMMI, ETC ETC. THEN I MEET THE ARTIST BECAUSE THEY ARE RECORDING WITH EVERYONE ELSE.

3. Will you be back for the next Iommi/Hughes album(I'm assuming there will be another) and will you have a more active role, such as writing? If I recall you joined Fused after it was mostly finished.

Most of us have heard the 3 Bonus tracks from Fused but was there anything else that wasnt released?

WE HOPE TO MAKE ANOTHER RECORD FOR SURE. IT DEPENDS ON SCHEDULES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. I WAS INVOLVED WITH WRITING ONE SONG ON THE ALBUM THIS TIME. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WILL HAAPEN NEXT TIME WITH THE WRITING, BUT I LOVE WHEN A BAND WRITES TOGETHER. IT'S EXCITING. WHEN WE ALL PLAYED TOGETHER IT FELT LIKE A BAND IMMEDIATELY. VERY COOL VIBES. I LOVED WORKING WITH GLENN AND TONY BOTH AS MUSICIANS AND PEOPLE. THAT'S COOL YOU HEARD TEH THREE BONUS TRACKS. ONE OF MY FAVORITES IS" LET IT DOWN EASY'. I THINK THAT'S EVERYTHING WE RECORDED IN THAT SESSION.

And lastly...
Do you ever have a day off!?

DAY OFF? WHAT'S THAT. : ) RARELY. ON MY DAYS OFF, I PRACTICE AND DO BUSINESS AND RELAX IN BETWEEN THOSE THINGS. I LOVE MY WORK, IT'S MY LIFE.

eiricd asked:
hi
who's the best artist you've worked with? any1 you would like to work with?

TO MANY ARTISTS TO MENTION. I ENJOY MOST EXPERIENCES FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER. THE PEOPLE I WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH ARE THE PEOPLE I HAVEN'T WORKED WITH AND THERE ARE SO MANY, THAT IT WOULD TAKE TO LONG TO LIST. I WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH JEFF BECK AND ERIC CLAPTON AND I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO WORK WITH JIMMY HENDRIX, AND I AM GLAD I GOT TO WORK WITH STEVIE RAY VAUGHN

who are your favourite drummers??

MANY MANY DRUMMERS ARE GREAT THESE DAYS. I HAVE NO ONE FAVORITE. ANYONE THAT IS GOOD I LIKE. : )

Magica asked:

Hi. I'm a big, big fan of your work with John Mellencamp. Any plans of working with John again in the future??

NO PLANS AS OF NOW. I HAD A GREAT 17 YEARS.

Regarding your work with Tony. How did the plans unfold (i.e. when did you meet)??

I MET TONY THE DAY AFTER MY LAST SHOW WITH THE SMASHING PUMPKINS IN 1998. TONY, BILLY CORGAN AND I RECORDED A FEW SONGS FOR TONY'S SOLO RECORD. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. BOB MARLETTE, THE PRODUCER OF THAT RECORD AND THE "FUSED" RECORD, CALLED ME TO DO THIS RECORD. I FLEW TO BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND LAST NOV. AND WENT RIGHT TO REHEARSAL.

Are you a fan of Black Sabbath?

YES I AM

wcanaris asked:

Hi !
Was the work with Glenn and Tony different form what you did with other artists ? Did they want you play in some style or gave you free hand in drum parts?

TONY AND GLENN LET ME DO WHAT I WANTED. THE PRODUCER BOB MARLETTE WAS THE ONE THAT WOULD MAKE SUGGESTIONS IF HE WANTED ME TO DO SOMETHING I EASN'T DOING.

What was the reason that you decided to take up drums?

IT WAS A NATURAL OUT LET FOR MY CRAZY ENDLESS PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ENERGY. : )

Hope Fused Tour won't avoid Poland !

I HOPE WE GET TO TOUR SOMEWHERE, SOMETIME ANYWHERE. : )

Brad asked:

I noticed that your on the Season 4 American Idol CD. I actually watched that season of American Idol because of the Rock singer's in the competition(Bo Bice and Constantine). What did you think of these guys and was your drumming featured in any of the songs they did? Which singer did you prefer and do you think Bo or Constantine will have successful careers?

I ACTUALLY NEVER SAW THE SHOW AND I NEVER MET THE SINGERS. I WAS IN THE STUDIO RECORDING SONGS FOR THEM TO OVERDUB TO.

mikesfmc asked:

Hi Kenny!
Thanks for doing this. Has Tony or Glenn ever mentioned what songs will be played when you's guys go on your?

NO. I HEARD AT ONE POINT THAT WE WOULD DO ALOT OF FUSED, BUT POSSIBLY A FEW OLD SABBATH TUNES. IT WILL ALL BE GREAT. I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO PLAYING LIVE WITH TONY AND GLENN.

dp344 asked:

Hi Kenny,
You played with a lot of different people (Mellencamp-Fogerty-Willie Nelson-Melissa Etheridge).
I know you got involved with Iommi-Hughes because you played on Tony's other solocd.

Had you met Glenn before and or did you know his solocds?

YES I HAD MET GLENN BEFORE AND WE HAD TALKED ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER A LONG TIME AGO, SO THIS WAS GREAT THAT WE COULD FINALLY DO THAT. THE NEXT THING IS TO TOUR AND MAKE ANOTHER RECORD. BUT TOUR FIRST SO THAT WE BRING THAT LIVE EXPERIENCE INTO THE STUDIO.

What's your favourite artist you played with and what is your favourite kind of music (band)?

THERE ARE TO MANY PEOPLE THAT I HAVE ENJOYED PLAYING WITH FOR MANY DIFFERENT REASONS. SO I CAN'T SAY THERE IS ONE PERSON I LOVED WORKING MORE THAN ANOTHER. I LOVE ROCK N ROLL THE MOST OUT OF ALL MUSIC.

Is Fused the heaviest thing you played on?

NO FUSED IS NOT THE HEAVIEST RECORD I HAVE DONE. I DID A SONG ON TONYS RECORD IN 1998. ALSO ALICE COOPERS DRAGON TOWN ALBUM, CINDERELLA, AND ALDO NOVA. ALSO SOME UNKNOWN ARTISTS.

How was it to play live in the studio with Tony and Glenn?

IT WAS FANATASTIC. : )

Rahul asked:
It may be technically an Iommi solo album, but was the Fused album a band thing? Did you all get to have your input? Were you allowed to dictate to the others how you think certain songs should sound, and how you are going to drum on them?

MOST ALL THE SONGS WERE WRITTEN AND ARRANGED BEFORE I GOT TO THE REHEARSALS, BUT I WAS INVOLVED WITH WRITING ONE SONG AND I WAS ABLE TO GIVE MY OWN INPUT ABOUT ANYTHING. SO IT WAS LIK EBEING IN A BAND. TONY AND GLENN ARE VERY COOL PEOPLE AND GREAT MUSICIANS.
