I originally bought this on tape back in 1994 when it was first released. At the time, I didn't particularly think that much of it - the eastern influences didn't really appeal to me in the slightest. However, over the past few years, I have really began to like it a lot. After buying this new DVD version today, I am now in love with it! First of all, before you turn it on, you have to prepare yourself for the fact that this is not Led Zeppelin. The absence of John Paul Jones from this project was well documented in the media at the time, so I am not going to bother discussing it now.

Whilst Robert Plant's vocals may not be as good as they used to be and Page's guitar playing a little less frantic, the enthusiasm the two have for playing the songs they originally created shines through. Long gone are the dragon suits and the open chested blouses of the 70's and replaced with well ironed shirts and trousers! With this more refined and mature image, sound and presence there lies a very good piece of rock music.

To me, the absolute highlight of this album is the wonderful performance of The Rain Song. Page's guitar playing is superb and really makes it sound good. I always actually felt that Zep's version of this song somewhat lacked in spirit - maybe it was because Page played it on an electric, but nonetheless, he really nails it this time. Kashmir, with its slightly altered arrangement also really stands out. The use of the orchestra really emphises the strength of the strong.

There isn't really a low point of this DVD. Some of the songs are played pretty much as the originals - Friends, Gallows Pole, The Rain Song being a few - but some have completely different arrangements. Of these altered arrangements, No Quarter works the best becoming an acoustic ballad with a twist.

Overall, this is a fantastic release and well worth buying if you are a fan of Led Zeppelin. It's absolutely nothing like last year's DVD, but then again they are 20 years older by this time!

I wouldn't give it a 10 but I do find it to be alot more enjoyable than the recent DVD set,I will buy the Unledded DVD,maybe the upgrade makes it even better.
Of course I'm going to have to mention that the show I saw on that tour was one of the greatest performances I've ever witnessed,10 times better than LZ were at the Kingdome in 1977,and although I enjoyed them the next time out together in 1998,it still lacked the magic of the "Unledded" concert.

You've had this since 94,hhmm,were you born with a guitar in your hand or what???? emoticon

Well he could have been about nine or ten at the time. That´s the age you were when you were into early Black Sabbath and Trapeze as you mentioned.

10 out of 10? I wouldn't even give it a 5... Compared to the 70s heyday DVD they put out a few months back this is merely a limp lifeless reminder of what LZ was all about, IMHO anyway. Not to mention that most of the footage on there is mimed. emoticon

I quite like the alternative takes on songs like No Quarter and Nobody's Fault But Mine. Also, besides anything Kashmir is just awesome!

I don't have anyting against being a pre teen and being exposed to fine mature music,it just boggles me when it's not the flavor of the week music as apposed to heavy rock,it just makes me wonder a little about where the interest comes from, with me it was that as far back as 1968,my father and all of my uncles exposed me to heavy rock, pretty much nailing to my brain, but the difference is,that happened to be the music that was booming at the time.
Si it stayed with me,I'm still a little young to be a Purple fan as far as being from that generation goes,I was exposed to it,but I still don't consider it my era, that would be a later generation that I'm glad to say has gone. emoticon
I may have only been 10 when SOTW was out,but I knew it because it was big,not becuase I prefered over anything else, cos at the time,it was the flavor of the week,I didn't have a whole lot of choices.
So you see it's much different to be aware of good music like this 10 years ago at the age of 10,then it was 30 years ago at the age of ten, there wasn't much to choose from way back in those days.
I find it very cool to be so young, yet so decisive and well knowledged about music.
I'm not patronizing you,I'm complimenting you.
I just wonder where the influence lies,I know I had mine.
Come to think of it,they are teaching music culture in shcool these days, but they weren't doing that till I was out of college. emoticon
Being from America could have alot to do with my bemusement on this subject, because "music is so seperated here as apposed to Europe" [Plants very own words]
Picture the music scene in London, thats what it's like throughout America,a friggen fashion show.

Keep rockin Ali,you have tons of enthusiasm, but I take it you also play music to some level of skill as well,so your opinion is even more significant to me.
[just guessing]

Again, thank you! Do you mind if I ask why you think I play music to some level of skill, as you put it?! That has intrigued me Larry!! emoticon
