Pink Floyd- The Final Cut... An Appreciation!!
This subject was inspired by the semi-discussion in the "What are you listening to?" thread. I have always regarded this album highly in the pantheon of Pink Floyd catalogue. I, still to this day, think that this album, along with Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, is the most depressing record I have ever heard. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. I enoy all sides of the spectrum, mood wise that is. Anyway, sure, this one isn't a Pink Floyd album. It is quite obvious that good ol' Rog pretty much pissed everybody off at this time, probably even himself. I think that The Final Cut gives you exactly what you need at every moment. I love the perfect blend of acoustic Waters with the breathtaking electric injections by David Gilmour. Just listen to the guitar solo in THe Final Cut or The Fletcher Memorial Home, for example, it raises the hair on the back of my neck everytime. I think this album is well crafted and well executed. Once you get over the fact that it isn't a lush and beautiful Pink Floyd arrrangement, like Wish You Were Here or Meddle, then this one definately grows and grows on you. The Final Cut is a wonderfully introspective journey through life. I admit I can't listen to this one all the time, like a Darkside or Machine Head, but when I need a darker album I will pull this one out. Don't be so stubborn people, just enjoy!!!

Re: Pink Floyd- The Final Cut... An Appreciation!!
Count me in. Jeez, just yesterday I´ve asked another Floyd fan who also liked it.
I think you gotta love it. Gilmour´s guitar parts are brilliant(as you said e.g. in the Fletcher Memorial Home), and the saxophone solo at the end of Two Suns In The Sunset(which in the end only features Waters and Gilmour) is just gorgeous, no matter how much Floyd this has to be.
It´s of course more lyrical than musical, but what´s on there is classy and in some parts better than much on The Wall. People just seem to hate it for the sake of hating it as it more or less lead to Floyd´s breakup(but The Wall more or less did that as well to an extend). So either you love or hate it, and I say that you gotta love it. Great album!

Yup. But it's less depressing than some of Water's later solo albums, like Amused To Death. Or would you agree?
Anyway, it's my opinion The Final Cut is even a better album than The Wall, and that says something always. Even if such a statement is highly arguably, of course.
--- (hey, have you heard?? Here's one who like BOTH Blackmore AND Morse! No, it's true, I swear. Right here! Come have a look... )

Have not heard The Pros And Cons Of Hitchiking, but the girl on the cover's got a useful bag. A superb "never-leave-home-without-it" style.

My problem with this album is not that it is depressing, but it is just bloody boring! Whilst Waters is undoubtedly a fantastic lyricist, he isn't one for composing the ol' tunes! This is also my problem with The Wall.

Depressing? I find it melancholic to happy. A bit like Wish You Were Here. It´s mostly a story telling album, that´s right. But Gilmour plays some great guitar solos though.

Have seen there are a new version out,
The Final Cut incl. When tigers broke free,
but still it never be my top album with Pink
Floyd. The demo's from the album are out on
bootleg, fun to hear but not the best sound.

The Final Cut has to be one of the most underated album of the band.
The cut I like the best is Not Now John.

The album is about a war veteran who attempts to return to normal life and everybody shuns him. He eventually tries to kill himself, which is The Final Cut, but he never had the nerve to do the last cut.
Melancholy?
