Re: "Backyard" recording
I think ROTD content is pretty good. As for production, I've heard better. Bradford is good but the distortd voice is really not to my liking. Maybe I'm old fashoned but I also don't like digital recordings. MH was wonderful. Stark, clean, quiet and defined. I also don't care for the glover remixes. He did something to the sound to brighten it or make it have more of a vibe (for lack of a better term) sounds distorted to me. High quality analog recording is what my ears like.

Re: "Backyard" recording
If you look at ROTD as a musical painting, it's a pretty intense and heavy affair. The sound quality and cover art actually go well together, in my opinion. Love it!

Couldn't agree more - I prefer listening to the original MH and Fireball. The "brightened" aspect is never more evident than in the remastered Strange Kind of Woman - I always go back to the original recording. This why I like Bradford's production - it's warmer and straightforward - each instrument has it's own little space. It's a tighter sound. MH and Fireball will always be my favorite sounding albums.

Re: "Backyard" recording
No question that the overall sound Bradford gets is good. I like it better than PS, HOBL, TBRO and Abandon. Purpendicular mix is better balanced though. There are a a few things on ROTD that I dont care for. One piano bit is way down in the mix (was it intended?) Paice's little fills and other nice touches are there but washed out. Gillan's voice is distorted in some places.
Hey wouldn't it be cool if you could buy the recording "unmixed" and muck around with it yourself?

Re: "Backyard" recording
I'm wondering if it's not so much the production that stinks as the final mastering. I definitely hear those vocal distortions that others talk about, for instance that spoken "market forces" bit in Money Talks and Gillan's vocals sound very digital all over the place.
ROTD could potentially sound great and I think the production is far more raw and enjoyable than Bananas, but Bradford subscribes to the louder is better approach, like everyone else these days, resulting in some ugly distortion.

"Purpendicular mix is better balanced though"
I do not agree here. There is too litle piano on this record or when there is one, it blends with the guitar too much. All is too sterile. Bananas and ROTD are better in this respect.
But the fact is I am not satified with the mix/sound of any Purple record from the 80's onward.
For me the ultimate mix/production will be on In Rock and Fireball. Actually Fireball is my fave.

!@#$, man! what the hell are you saying??? Any professional sound engineer will tell you that the sound on Bananas and ROTD sucks from many reasons! Plus, c'mon, can't you hear how far in the mix Paicey is on ROTD??? Can't you hear that the album simply needs much more work in the sound studio???
