This 17 yo guy in some store was blasting ROTD over the sound system and seemed to be getting into it. I asked him his opinion:
"Serious tunes dude, ace soloing - but that pro do (production) really brings it down - come on now dude just listen to that drum buzz - it sounds like a rapper dude. Too bad without the bad pro do this is top 10 substance".
Sorry guys, I was being facetious. There was no such guy - no harm intended. I was trying to point out (obviously in poor sarcastic fashion) what Scar Tissue and others have said - the average listener hears the song/music first and maybe, if ever, the quality of the mix and/or production. Again, I have no problems with the sound - I like it. I like the separation of instruments - there's more "space" around the instruments in the music.
To show my unappreciation of better sound technology. I hate the remixed sound of Strange Kind of Woman - I don't know what it is, but I like the original version better. The new version sounds tinnier (some may consider that better clarity) and has less "warmth". I find Bananas and ROTD a warmer sound than say PS and HOBL.

No,I disagree
the sound was intended to be the live sound, the record was intended to sound as a live record
It was to be a spontaneous record and it is
The band has always been a live band that has paid more attention to concerts than to studio albums, and producing perfect sound
I think if we can hear good songs and the chemistry and this live heavy rock sound then everything is fine. for me that what dp is all about.
coming back to ROTD specifically, it sounds great to me, it sounds fresh, better than bananas , purpendicular (this one sounds too sterile and there is too little piano sound)and as good as Abandon
In some places mix could have been better (somebody mentioned the piano solo in junkyard blues - I agree) but all in all the album sounds great
I guess it is all about expectations. If you expect perfect sound and perectly made albums like Radiohead, Peter Gabriel or Pink Floyd made in the past, then you will be disapointed.
But if you take into consideration that DP is a live band that focuses on sponteneity, then you might agree that the ROTD album is close to the essence of contemporary Deep Purple
Fundamentally disagree!!! I too love live sounding Purple, but does that mean that the production should be poor? Do Gillan have distortied vocals during live shows? Do Paice' drums dissappear in the mix during liveshows? I think that ROTD is very livesounding, but i disagree that the sound of the record is livesounding. "Production" and "livesounding" is two different things!

I agree about the production. It could be better.

I don't think the production is poor. I think it's left a bit raw and fresh, still well balanced and good sounding.

Didn't last time I heard them.

No. Do they disaapear on Rapture???
Maybe you should adjust your 'drum gain control'
Sorry for joking but I don't follow your opinion.

I think it's a bit livesounding for a studio album, due to good production.

Re: "Backyard" recording
Look, if I want a live sounding album I buy one of the 100 live albums they have released. And when I want a studio album I want it to sound professional, not amateurish pretending to be a live sounding, for god's sake!!!
