"Backyard" recording
I got the limited edition of the ROTD and am disappointed by the recording (or remastering) quality. A lot of distortions in the vocals in some of the songs (check out Clearly Quite Absurd)and if listened with headphones, one can notice echoes of the next line, phrase or tones in the background a split second before it actually plays on the CD. Pretty much like if one records over the same tunes on an old tape. Is this a bad batch (Limited, duh!!!)? Does anyone notice my complaints?
Thanks,

Re: "Backyard" recording
The pre-echo on CQA is clearly quite intended.

Re: "Backyard" recording
If you listen to SIFLS on headphones it too has that annoying pre echo thing,to the exact same extent.
This album was recorded very swiftly, and it may have an everlasting effect on it's staying power...I'm afraid.
Take more care Deep Purple...this is my advice.

Re: "Backyard" recording
Thanks all for replying. This effect, the pre-echo, is something I never heard before, not the way this CD makes it out anyway. Gillan usually uses over dubbing of slightly flat or sharp voices to give songs more interesting harmonies. This CD however, clearly did not get the best attention on the production side.
Anyway, I like some of the tunes and as with new things, you keep humming them during the day which is quite pleasurable.

Re: "Backyard" recording
Great album, subdued in the percussion and vocal departments...so it's warts are evident, nevertheless, the material isn't bad,and the vibe is a consistant groove throughout, not a disaster, but it could have been done with better care to the tracking of each intstrument when it was mixed, and that didn't help the mastering, because once it's mixed, all you have to master is what you've already mixed...take good care, and one doesn't defeat the other...this album suffers from that, but not everyone will notice what I notice, which I didn't notice on Bananas, which many seemed to have, although the complaints very...the sound factors seem to be the common between the two.

That's why they need some else instead of Bradford. Sorry, but the album sounds rather amateurish.

Re: "Backyard" recording
I quite enjoy the album. It's not great but there are some good songs on it.
The sound is not good enough, though. No reason to have 'bad' sound even if the album was made quick. This is 2005.
I've played the cd for friends that are pro's on sound and music (rock) and they also say it's below par, no doubt.
That distortion thing on the vocals; I guess it's intended, too - like the predelay on CQA. But it sounds !@#$ .
Aerosmith have used the same approach on some vocals lately, but a lot more discret. Sounds good there. Like old mics and preamps. On ROTD is just sounds amateurish.
I think Bradford has done some good things with the sound, though, like bringing Gillan back up front, and stripping down the sound, like in the 70s. Later Glover productions (and TBRO!) has had a bigger sound. Bradford changed that and to my ears, it's a good thing.
Still I really wish Glover will take care of the next opus!

Re: "Backyard" recording
I agree with you on ALL your points except "they did the distortion on purpose" No, no - there is no excuse for this - or should I stand in the queue with 2 Euros less and explain to the cashier girl that Deep Purple is distorting it on purpose so that we can get the DP company discount??? No, no - the vocals are badly recorded and clip due to the layers of effects they used when mastering etc... I am still irritated by this as I also feel cheated as I only got 10 from 11 or 12 songs - poor show!

Re: "Backyard" recording
I love the sound of the new album, sort of "21st century IN ROCK."
Sure, there are moments where I would have changed the mix, such as, a louder piano during the solo of Junkyard Blues. But, the overall effect of this album is breathtaking!
