Rapture and Steve Morse
Ok so I am late to the game. I finally got around to buying ROTD. Various family issues delayed me. I have to say I really like this one. I'm trying to control the usual rush I get from new DP but ROTD is probabably the best since _|_ maybe even better. We'll see. I think Steve made a few adjustments on ROTD. He still tends to do the crazy fast scale runs (ok, widdle) but the riff on Don't Let Go is really cool to my ears. His tone is a little sharper and he really is sounding good here. It sounds a bit like mkIV. Almost sounds like a Strat. There are also a few hints at Blackmore here and there. When he refrains from widdle, I really like his playing.

After more listening, I have to say he's better but still to much widdle. He really doesn't need to do that. We get it, he can play scales really fast.

I agree ffitz, Steve`s playing is very good in places. I`ve never been a huge fan of his playing style but he rips out some excellent solos e.g Rapture (love the melodic 2nd solo),Junkyard Blues, Before Time Began and my favourite, Don`t let Go, which ,as you say is a bit Blackmoresque.
Yes, I know the `Widdle` still rears its ugly head here and there, but hey, it`s kind of like his trademark. What I find more annoying is his use of squealing harmonics, but even these are a held in check a bit more than usual.
If you listen to Richie through the years you can hear that he also has his own little signature licks and runs that he repeats. These things just become part of a guitarist`s style.
I`m going slightly off thread here, but it`s also great to hear so many decent keyboard solos from Don who I think has really left his mark on this album.

SM plays very well on ROTD. Much less fast scales and more melody. But he could have come up with a better first solo on the title track. But he evens things up with the very nice melodical part later on in the song.
Also, his sound is better than on the previous albums, it's less plastic.
