Ioannis about the cover

I sent a email to Ioannis asking all the confused questions. Here is his kind answer:

Hi Erik

Glad you're a fan, this project was one of the most difficult I have ever worked on as there was a lot of confusion and indecisiveness on the project from the art standpoint.

This caught me off guard as I have worked with DEEP PURPLE now close to 8 years. ABANDON being my first cover with them and my artwork.

The cover drawing is by Tom Swick, it was a color cartoon that Roger Gloversaw in a magazine (New Yorker I think) and thought it was an interesting idea to develop further. My firm submitted about a half dozen concepts Including some when the album had a different title.

When it came down to deciding on the cover Ian liked the cartoon as is, Roger wasn't sold on it and while in Switzerland preparing for the July part of the summer tour me and him worked on another six concepts for the cover
which I liked very much. I think those will see the light of day perhaps as another act's cover they are that good.

Returning from the tour Roger headed down to my design firm, and showed me how he had layout the cartoon that Ian liked for the front cover.

We than worked 8 -9 hour days for about a week or so and designed together the packaging for the new album which includes a 2 disc LP, Two Digipaks (10 and 11 song versions) complete with 16 page booklets different from the CD version. 3 CD JEWELCASES with a 16 page booklet (10,11 songs version and a Japanese version) and a promo poster.

We created 17 pieces of original art (with the origin being the cartoon) That I'm really proud of. The cover though is really all Rogers design, He picked the color, font, title art, and had the cartoon version done as a simple B/W.

For me this was the same as the way they asked me to work on Bananas Roger saw a picture in a news paper with Ian in the far east, Gave it to me along with the picture that their manager Bruce Payne Had taken and asked me to design around it.

The difference this time was that me and Roger worked together as Art directors which was a blast.

We are talking about doing a book project together and will hopefully work on the 2006 Tour Merchandise late next month.

As for the port hole cover I think it was submitted from the German label from a local agency, Roger thought it was the worst and was pissed when that was posted as the final as we were finishing the real cover!

Hope that answers all

Cheers
Ioannis

An excerpt of a very very interesting interview with Ioannis, although Purple are also mentioned elsewhere. Btw, the Yngwie bit is also worth reading for a laugh! emoticon

"Jeb: You had a hand in the Deep Purple Bananas record. That is a terrible cover. Very odd and anti-rock music. What is your take on it?

Ioannis: I got the call on Deep Purple in 1997 and my first project was the Abandon cover. I worked closely with Roger Glover on it. Since then it’s been a long relationship and I do a lot of their stuff. When the time came to do Bananas I was handed the photo and told that this was to be used as the cover. They were making a political statement about how people don’t think about how things they use come about and really don’t care. This was represented by the bananas. It showed how some poor schlep works for 10 cents a day to do this and how everyone is taking advantage of everyone else. I did the best I could with the concept. My favorite piece I did was the cover for the single “Haunted.” The tour book and t-shirts were cool as well. As for the package itself, either you got the idea or you didn't. When you look at a newspaper photo you don’t think of it as a work of art. It was a big hit in Brazil as they got it. If you wanted something cool and decorative it's not good but in the context of what they were saying it really worked. Needless to say I have mixed feelings on it."

Bananas cover terrible???
This is the coolest DP cover ever!!! Maybe not the BEST Purple cover, but the coolest. The last thing you need in DP is power metal artworks with dragons and knights...

I think Bananas had a quite good looking cover as well. I agree; Purple in a 80ish metal cover is bad taste.

I'm looking foreward to the Rapture booklet and the double LP cover, even if the front cover could have had a better lay out.

The metal box can also be cool.

I get used to it, I have it as my Desktop Wallpaper now. No surprise it looks like it does if Glover did it(didn´t he also do the Purpendicular cover?).

Dont know about Purpendicular, but I am one of the few who actually think that was a really good cover. For some reason.

And as I've said before, maybe the cover looks better when we see the hole thing, the booklet and all, as a concept. But it sounds a bit like Ioannis does not dig the front cover layout that much either. He talks maily about the illustrations and sais he is proud of them...

Same as with Bananas. There were lots of photos in front back and booklet. of Bananas. On Abandon he got to illustrate the whole thing. Seems he didn´t get as much work on Bananas(I think he only did the CD itself and the backrounds in the booklet).

With the exception of NP, all DP covers since the reunion suck. The last really good one was Stormbringer.

I disagree. Perfect Strangers and HOBL are great. Nobody's Perfect was the weakest so far.

After reading this interview I guess we can now be sure that this is the cover. NO doubt.

Bananas has a great cover, and absulutely in line with Purple nowadays. Actualy they all are since the man in black left. It looks like they are allowed to show some humor now.
