Re: Deep Purple signs with Edel records...

Hey, what are we worried about? It's probably their last or the first of the two last albums ever so does it really matter if they have a big or a small label to work with? Who cares. I'll buy their album anyway, even if it was released on the smallest of all labels. I could buy it via internet - anywhere. So what's the point? Advertising? Promoting? The group of fans won't get bigger or smaller because of range of promotion or distribution. It will stay the same. All the people who are to get to know DP will do it anyway.

We all know Deep Purple's managers through some 30 years + are the wrong people in the wrong place, who don't know the first thing about what they're doing and whatever they do is way wrong, and will always be. Who needs to wait and see?

I think that the simple fact of you and me discussing the state of a new contract and a new album shows that no matter how bad some decisions might have been (there were some very bad moves from the management indeed) something must have worked, or else we would simply be discussing how much better Fireball is than In Rock VS your opinion emoticon Deep Purple is one of the "old" bands that managed to keep it going and not becoming a nostalgia or oldie but goodie act emoticon They still sell out shows , put out new albums , and get a lot of media attention (much more than bands their age) when they do something new ! emoticon I think that Purple are doing fine ! and Bruce Payne while probably not the best manager for the job , he contributed a lot for the band still being a top class act ! Sometimes it´s hard for fans to understand certain career moves but the music business is not as clear and simple as i and many people would want it to be ! My whole point is that Deep Purple could be in a better position yes, but i think that they are in a damn good position in the world music ! They headline relevant festivals, they are mentioned , people talk about them, etc etc !

Something must have worked, yes. If Bruce Payne was as horrible as some fans like to portrait him, we probably wouldn't have much to discuss today. Agree with you on this (bet you got the irony in the last post emoticon)

In the Deep purple story there are indeed lots of career moves that are hard to understand, like:
- sacking Simper along with Evans (ok, getting Glover instead proved to work well, but what did they know at the time?)
- pushing Anyone's Daughter to promote Fireball...
- choosing Never Before as a singel, and treating Smoke On The Water as a filler track...
- letting Gillan without even trying to keep him in, and throwing out Glover with him
- keep on going after loosing Blackmore
- twice
- etc.

But yeah, Led Zeppelin died a long time ago, but somehow Deep Purple is living still! Bigger back then, bigger today. Whoever said LZ was the biggest band in rock history? And when could that claim have been correct? emoticon

Re: Deep Purple signs with Edel records...

This is the very first time that a Deep Purple studio album will be originally released in a small independent label in Europe.

Maybe if they have a STUNNING HARD ROCK GUITARIST, Sony-BMG might sign 'em.

Let's look on the bright side, Purple could be the biggest name on Edel Records roster, so I agree with the earlier post that Purple might be treated as KINGS on this label, let's hope Bruce Payne made the right choice.

The only problem with indie labels is the distribution and marketing is not as good as the major labels.

RAPTURE OF THE DEEP is a good title, the band deserves some praises for NOT taking so long to make the follow-up to BANANAS.
