Saxon DVD review

Hot on the heels of the negative Meat Loaf concert review of another thread, here's something even worse; some smart ass, probably in his late 20s early 30s, know-it-all "hip" Yankee reviewing the new Saxon 2-disc DVD "The Saxon Chronicles" over at dvdverdict.com. I haven't read such a shitty "aren't I funny" review in quite a while, I wonder what the diehard Saxon fans will say ? I'm just a casual fan, and I say: emoticon

Saxon DVD review by an idiot

I don't even like any NWOBHM bands but all I can say is...what a wanker.

Saxon was cool back in the day,I can see RH'S point though,if you weren't there you have nothing much to get excited about with most of the bands, except Gillan of course,
which for some reason was considered a part of the movement. emoticon

But good music is still good music, isn't it ? That's what I don't understand younger reviewers can't see. It's just ridiculous to say a band should stop playing the music they like and wrote 25 years ago, and go die under some rock just because they've gotten older which is basically what this guy said in the review. At dvdreviewer.co.uk there are similar negative reviews about new DVDs from Uriah Heep and Asia, though not as brain dead, again focusing on the age thing. Bands today could never write intelligent prog and classically inspired rock if they practiced forever, so it's very annoying to see it put down by unaware assholes. (I don't mean Saxon music, but adult rock in general.)

That's as ignorant a statement as most of that DVD review, there a plenty of fantastic musicians around today and some of them might even be able to play circles around the bands of old...we just don't get to hear them because the music industry is now run by accountants and they can't sell that sort of stuff easily and even if the talented ones do get through, they'll have to conform to the standards of popular music today to be heard.

That reviewer clearly has his head up his arse but music isn't above reproach just because it's old...and anyway, it really is pretty sad/funny to see middle-aged men with bald patches and liver spots acting like they're still in their 20s. emoticon

Aren't you really doing the same thing he did by saying it's "sad/funny" for middle-aged men to play their music just because it happens to be heavy metal ? Unlike, say, jazz, it's still a relatively new type of music. Ozzy and Lemmy are still at it too, as Frank Sinatra was at a ripe age albeit a different genre. I do disagree about young rock musicians today, I think they've un-learned what they never really knew in the first place. In a personal opinion - a band many people seem to rave about, Dream Theater, still are nowhere as good songwriters as Kerry "Kansas" Livgren or Todd "Utopia" Rundgren on their worst days. emoticon

You are both right actually. emoticon
Music has alway's been about 50% good and 50% crap and always will be,our opinions help sort it all out somehow. emoticon

I never said anythng about the music, it's the macho posturing and all the denim and leather. Compare that to the way Deep Purple conduct themselves, they can still play tunes like Speed King without looking like a bunch of sad old farts trying to cling on to youth that has passed them by. It's called aging gracefully. emoticon

To your taste maybe, there are bands like Mostly Autumn or even Mr Morrisey's own Celtic Legacy as well as a new generation of folk bands that write fantastic tunes, just because you haven't heard them doesn't mean that young musicians can't write songs. Again, that's an incredibly ignorant thing to say.

Ignorant ? What's ignorant about not liking new stuff ? That's what this is about, and I happen to think it's not as good. -I thought that would be the unwritten law on a DP site. emoticon
