Inside Pink Floyd - A Critical Review
Inside Pink Floyd - A Critical Review
Got this DVD from Classic Rock Productions the other week. It basically gives you an in depth analysis of every Floyd album to date by an "independant team of music critics, working musicians and musicologists".
Some of the reviewing is slightly pro-Gilmour in that it gives A Momentary Lapse Of Reason five stars, The Final Cut three and Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn two. Indeed overall, nobody seems two keen on the Syd Barrett years at all which is a shame.
There are members of Mostly Autumn who give renditions of some of the songs and tell you why it is an odd chord sequence! Just ever so slightly annoying. That keyboard player's voice is the most irritating voice I have ever heard! Indeed, at points it seems that this DVD is nothing more than a Mostly Autumn propaganda film as it seems to really hark on about them being linked to the next Pink Floyd. Slightly suspect.
There are some rare live clips of the band playing Cymbaline, Atom Heart Mother and Granchester Meadows, but these really are only clips. There are no interviews as such with the band, just extracts from the Syd Barrett BBC documentary.
Overall, this is not as good as I had hoped it would be. My only real gripes with it are that seems to be strongly promoting Mostly Autumn when it is a Pink Floyd DVD and that it is very pro-Gilmour years. It's an interesting watch, but not really essential viewing.

Re: Inside Pink Floyd - A Critical Review
Hmmm. Thanks for the unbiased review. All I've heard so far was Mostly Autumn's manager raving about how great this DVD is, and I thought it sounded a bit dodgy! Sounds like something I'll give a miss.
There is a whole series of them, including a Deep Purple one (not available yet, I think), but I honestly can't see the point.

It really takes the piss how much Mostly Autumn are raved up on this. It's almost cringe worthy at times it is that bad.

It's a shame because it will probably do them more harm than good. The thing is, they really are huge Pink Floyd fans so they probably thought doing it was great fun, not just some cheap publicity. Ah well.

They probably don't like Piper At The Gates of Dawn because it doesn't sound like Mostly Autumn!

Yeah I gathered they liked their Floyd right enough. Still though, they should have realised that this DVD was a bad move?

Touche! The one comment that really pissed me off was when the narrator said that PATGOD is not an essential Floyd album. That's a load of pish!!

I liked the way Bryan sings Comfortably Numb. But the comparison to PF is obviously doing Mostly Autumn more harm than good!

I don't!! Yes I think this comparison isn't a good one as, in my opinion, they sound bugger all like the Floyd!!

Re: Inside Pink Floyd - A Critical Review
I watched this DVD again yesterday to see if I could enjoy any more second time around. On a second viewing it doesn't strike me as irritating as the first time I watched it! I still find it quite annoying how much they right off Piper At The Gates Of Dawn by giving it 2 stars and then giving More 3 stars and A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 5 stars!
One thing I picked up on yesterday though which made me laugh, was instead of using Floyd's version of Comfortably Numb as the intro tape, they use, yes you got it, Mostly Autumn's!!
