few players can actually play RBs riffs properly, on spotlight kid, Burn, SOTW etc between the diads on the D AND G strings he hit the bottom E to give heaviness/dynamics. a lot of people miss this.

Covers of Ritchie's riffs can often sound interesting if the guitarist puts their own mark on it. The worst covers are generally when the guitarist has attempted (and normally failed) to imitate Ritchie's style.

I've always considered Lord's comment of Bolin not being "technically accomplished" to refer to stuff like Burn riff, the HS arppeggios (which he didn't play at all)... he simply couldn't play them with precision and attack. He was in a way technically accomplished (as demostrated on Spectrum), but he was not a precise player - one of those otherwise gifted players who just can't play anything complicated or articulated twice.
I don't think he made any attempt to try and learn them.Mk III didn't really do HS any justice either,it was just a jam around so Ritchie could trash a guitar.Basically,Bolin just picked up on the riffs from jamming around as opposed to trying to sit down and pick the pieces out from the recordings.Lazy was just the jam Jon did before You Fool No One.It might have served Mk IV better of they'd made an attempt to tighten up a bit and learn a few of the passages,or drop it altogether. On the Auckland show,Bolin hasn't much of a clue as to the structure of Burn, forget about playing the appeggios.Tommy was the guy who played Quadrant 4 and other tunes,I'm sure some effort and sobriety would have worked wonders. drinking

Re: Best live version of "Burn"
Yeah, Bolin probably realised it would take far too long to learn the parts properly. Thus he just played something in the same key.

That, too, was my impression. He was usually in the right key. In Australia,he's got a rough idea of the structure, then jams along the tune while the band plays it.There've been time when Ritchie sounds like he did pretty much the same thing on various tunes, the PS tour comes to mind.

I think he meant: Ritchie played various numbers during the PS tour in a similar way Tommy played things like HS oder Burn.
