A Hurdy Gurdy is a bit of an oddity and very rarely seen outside purist early music so there are no players you'd know of unless you were really into that kind of thing.

Basically, it produces sound in the same way as every other acoustic stringed instrument, a vibrating string vibrates a wooden soundboard which moves a lot more air than just the string, reverberates inside the hollow body and projects outwards through openings in the top plate, (in this case small F-holes like a violin). Instead of being bowed like violin family instruments or plucked like a fretted instrument, the strings are vibrated by the contact of a wheel that touches them near the bottom that is rotated by a handle sticking out of the end of the body and turned by the right hand and instead of manually manipulating the length of the strings with the fingers as you would on a violin or a guitar, the strings pass through a box where a mechanism operated by keys activated by the left hand does so. It also has drone strings that sound a constant note like bagpipes and as the notes have no decay when the wheel is in motion, I've heard more than one person mistake the sound of a Hurdy Gurdy for bagpipes. You can see a picture of one in the painting used as the cover of Deep Purple next to the harp and the lute on the left, because of it's appearance in that painting, the style of Hurdy Gurdy seen there is now known as a "Bosch pattern".

RB has no style sense..white boots and dressed in black? Candace, besides calling the shots, is dressing him these days as well?

A diatribe, to RS who always finds something to complain about God Gillan.

For me it's no matter what he's dressed like! And even if he would enter the stage barenaked.. Who cares? He's guitarplayer and not a supermodel! emoticon
