The Ramones
Again, as a result of the Old Grey Whistle Test DVDs, I've gotten quite heavily into The Ramones.
Yes, it's punk, but there's something about this band although I understand most of them are no longer with us?

Re: The Ramones
The reason why the the Ramones stand out is because of the humorous lyrics. That is their niche, and that makes them entertaining.

Re: The Ramones
I love the Ramones, i have all their albums, and i think that there´s much more to it than the lyrics ! Lyrics like "i´m not afraid of life" or "Danny says" hardly are humoristic " I think that a lot of lyrics are about fun, the sun, cars, girls (but not in a 80´s metal style, more in a 50´s rock/beach boys style) but Dee Dee Ramone wrote a lot about social issues oh and the music is just fantastic ! they almost don´t have any bad songs at least not in untill 79
Rock On
João
P.S. - Poison Heart from 1988 or 89 is the worst song they got

That's tragic. I was very taken with the visual appearance of the band, particularly the vocalist with the shades. There was something charismatic about that guy.
"Try, try....why do I have to?"
Simple but emotive all the same...

Re: The Ramones
What happened to the three of them? Very unusual that a band that isn't that old (I say that relatively speaking), would have already suffered such tragic loss.

According to what I can find on the net -
Joey Ramone - cancer 2001
Dee Dee Ramone - overdose 2002
Johnny Cummings - cancer 2004
If it's true...it's tragic.
May they rest in peace

Re: The Ramones
You sometimes can't help reading into these things but did Dee Dee overdose as a result of Joey's death?
Then the final irony...Johnny goes the same way as Joey. A truly tragic set of circumstances that nobody deserved.
A newspaper comment on Joey -
'Joey's deadpan delivery of fast and furious songs was unique'
This was one of the things that attracted me to the band along with the straight and precise musical style....oh yeah, and the lyrics! That 'Rock 'N' Roll High School' made me sit up and take notice.
And simple though the music is, there is a uniqueness to it that marries well with Joey's vocal tone and manner of delivery.
I've got the 'Loud, Fast Ramones - Their Toughest Hits' CD. Although each number has a similar back-beat, you're instantly drawn into them by the way numbers kind of avalanche onto you from the outset (d'you know what I mean by that?). They also had a very good understanding of tempo and keeping things simple.
