Yes: Which one next?

Hi everyone.

Yes is the latest classic-prog-group I discovered, and I must say: I love their music. So far I own/know Fragile and Close to the Edge. Fragile is very good; Close to the Edge is nothing but brillant. 11 points from 10.

So I will not hesitate to buy other albums by this band, but cannot not buy them all now for financial reasons. Therefore my question is: Which one would you recommand? I have to mention, that I a especially a fan of Chris Squire and Rick Wakeman. As far as I know (but what do I know?), Squire plays on all their albums. But Wakeman (who holds a very strong 2nd place on my all-time-favourite-keyboard-player-list (guess who's 1st emoticon )) doesn't. So I would prefer to buy an album where Wakeman participated. But you can also convince me of the contrary.

Thanx a lot for your advice!

Well Wakeman plays neither on The Yes Album nor on Relayer. Both I´d highly recommend, though as they are just great albums(the later being a little underrated).

Oh and if you can´t stand Tales Of Topographic Oceans(with Wakeman) without falling asleep you have my greatest respect! I haven´t managed that so far!emoticon

First get The Yes album. Every song a classic. But no Wakeman on it I believe. Still, this one is a classic. Get the Rhino remaster version, if at all possible.

Then get Going for the One. The classic line up, and a great album.

And last, get Relayer. Even without Wakeman, this is a must have.

There are many other good Yes albums after this, but with what you have, and the three above, you have the core essentials of the band.

I like Tales a great deal. Revealing Science and Rituals are both excellent, and the other two, while not as good, are still both decent.

RELAYER!
IT's not got Wakeman on it (he left in a huff after Tales from the Topographic Oceans only to rejoin for Going for the One and Tormato) but you seriously won't miss him. Patrick Moraz does an outstandingly brilliant job. This is my alltime favourite Yes album - I'd have to say its incredibly diverse considering it's just three songs long. There's no real standout cut here - but the first track Gates of Delirium features some brilliant keyboard soloing. I'm told Moraz left to join the moody blues and wasn't half as good with em.
I'd recommend Going for the One next - some great work by Wakeman especially on Awaken and Wondrous Stories (also look out for the Wakeman piano album in which he covers this track - it's sublime!) though i personally do not like it as much as Tales
Tales is a pretty hard album to get into and makes enormous demands on your time - 4 songs (6 if you buy the remaster and I STRONGLY recommend you do - the sound quality is infintely better) around 20 minutes long. It's far more loosely structured than anything Yes did before (or after) and is often dissed for being directionless wankery - all i gotta say is if this is directionless wankery give some more! The standout tracks on this one from the keyboard perspective are The Revealing Science of God and The Remembering.
Next up, we got Tormato - another very poorly regarded Yes album. Even hardcore fans often diss this for its annoying keyboard tones - I don't find anything wrong with em personally - to my ears the keyboard tones on latter day DT and their clones is far worse - but if you can get past the tones, Wakeman is jaw-droppingly awesome on 'The Silent Wings of Freedom', 'Future Times' and 'Madrigal'.

Tales is my co-favourite, right there with Close to the Edge emoticon

Thank you. Who plays the keys on The Yes Album and Relayer? Is there a chance that I know the guy(s)?

To answer the other half: Tony Kaye(the original keyboardist) plays on The Yes album. Wakeman joined on Close To The Edge and stayed for Tales...Patrick Moraz plays on Relayer and Wakeman on Going For The One Again. Tony Kaye rejoined the band in the nineties for the album Talk...but Wakeman plays on most albums from GFTO on I think...
