Uriah Heep
I got Uriah Heep's The Ultimate Collection album a few weeks back and have to say that I am not overly impressed by it.
The track list is as follows:
Disc one:
1. Gypsy
2. Come Away Melinda
3. Bird Of Prey
4. Lady In Black
5. Look At Yourself
6. July Morning
7. The Wizzard
8. Easy Livin'
9. Sunrise
10. Magician's Birthday
11. Sweet Lorraine
12. Stealin'
13. Sweet Freedom
14. Wonderworld
15. Something Or Nothing
Disc two:
1. Return To Fantasy
2. Prima Donna
3. One Way Or Another
4. Wise Man
5. Free Me
6. Free 'n' Easy
7. Come Back To Me
8. Fallen Angel
9. Feelings
10. Too Scared To Run
11. On The Rebound
12. Think It Over
13. That's The Way That It Is
14. The Other Side Of Midnight
15. Stay On Top
16. Hold Your Head Up
17. Blood Red Roses
18. Blood On Stone
19. Different World
So what out of that lot is any good? I haven't overly struck by any of it really.

Re: Uriah Heep
I don't like collections too much, I prefer the original studio albums, but I have to say, that Disc 1 is very good. Gypsy, Look at yourself, July Morning or Sunrise for example are fantastic Heep tracks! To me after Byron left, it wasn't the same anymore and most songs of Disc 2 are without him...

Re: Uriah Heep
If you don't like any of those tracks, maybe you should try the album "Conquest"...which could be considered as their Slaves and Masters or Come Taste the Band-If you see what I mean...
Anyway, it seems like a great collection, especially the first Cd.Features the classics.I agree that "Anthologies" or "Best Of" aren't the greatest thing in the world, but this one gives you a pretty good idea of Heep's work.

Re: Uriah Heep
If you don't like this collection then you won't like Heep, so just leave it there!
As mentioned, Disc One is excellent, and the beginning of Disc two. But things were never the same after Hensley left.
In fact, I am not a big fan of Heep post 1979. Once the Lawton/Hensley era was over, it just didn't sparkle very much for me.
And before they got Lawton, I thought the Byron era had gone incredibly stale.
So they can be hit and miss, but when they were on form, they made some fabulous music. It's just a shame that the epic 16 minute Salisbury is not included in this compilation, because they really is out of this world.

Re: Uriah Heep
Collections are ok to start off with but generally I think you are better off buying the albums themselves. For UH there are many songs that I would have included on a 'best of' that are not mentioned here. My advice is to get all the Byron era albums as they are far superior to the later stuff. Leave High and Mighty to the end though as this is not typical of Heep in the 70's and is a little too light and poppy for my liking.

Re: Uriah Heep
Surely one of you can help me with the following question: On which album can I find "Lady In Black"?

Re: Uriah Heep
It seems that you' might be best off following Rahul's advice, Mr.Tait. Though The Mule + Durple also offer some good suggestions, too.
If you feel like doling out the cash, I'd suggest the following studio albums:
Salisbury
Look At Yourself
Demons + Wizards
The Magician's Birthday
Return To Fantasy
Firefly
Innocent Victim
Abominog
Seeing as the # of studio albums is pretty large, those are the ones I suggest as a kind of "primer". As for Heep's live stuff, it's hard to go wrong - they're a kick ass band in a live setting.
