Re: Avatars
From a technical point of view, restricting the file size of a linked image hosted on another server would be very difficult... maybe even impossible. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any way to do it.

Re: Avatars
I take it back, I have thought of a way to do it. But it's not a good method and would put a huge strain on the server and significantly slow down the page download.
I think I'll hop over to the support forums and see if there has been any other discussion about this (because now I'm interested in finding a solution).

Re: Avatars
www.telecaster.com does it
you can upload your own but it has to be 5kb, so i was like 'fine, ill host it on my own space' but it wouldnt let me use one bigger then 5kb either.
i dont know much about programming message boards, but what would be so hard/straining to make a line that checks the file size of the image you try and use?
keep in mind you set the restriction and it blocks when you try and set the avatar

Re: Avatars
Yes, it would be fairly easy to check and block when you first set the avatar. But there is no guarantee that the file will always remain the same. I might put an avatar, me.gif, on my Web space, and when I put it in my control panel Runboard checks and see's it's only 5k. No problem. Then later I find a better version of me.gif that's 100k. I copy this up to my Web space -- and now my avatar is 100k but Runboard still thinks it's ok.
(Try it on your telecaster avatar -- replace it with a bigger file of the same name and see if telecaster notices. I'll be interested to hear the result.)
Ok, this isn't going to be a common occurrence, so maybe it would be simple for Runboard to do the checks anyway and therefore catch at least most of the big files.

Re: Avatars
You don't see it here, but on Runboard Support there are people who change their avatar pics daily. I'm sure they would find out very quickly how to bypass an initial check by simply keeping the same file name for their changing avatars.
Good thinking here, though. *smiles*
