It's been up before, and was rejected due to not all having broadband connections.

Avatars can really be a pain if you're on a modem connection, and the avatars are too big, as some of them really are.

Even if you have a broadband connection, some people has to pay pr. MB they download, and downloading the same 100KB image 20 times on a day makes 2 MB wasted download.

So in my not so humble opinion, avatars is a bad idea, unless you can make sure no image is larger than 5KB.

Not even a little 5kb avatar? I post on a guitar site that limits them to 5kb and most boards you can turn avatars off for yourself if you wish not to view them, can you not do that here?

besides, people put little images in the signatures already

5kb would be fair sized avatars, but unfortunately there's no chance of setting a size limit. And singly users can't turn of/off avatars as they please.

At least they could provide an upload area for peoples avatars. That way they could also easier restrict/modify an size-offending graphic.

If they make avatars selectable for each user, I have no complaints. But they must be off by default. In these days of dsl, many people seem to forget, that it's not available for the masses all over the world.

a 5kb avatar takes approximately 1 sec to download on a good 56kbps modem connection. 25 posts on one page (or how many is) makes it 125 kb equals 25 secs downloadtime (if it was all different posters all using avatars). Then comes the rest of the page.

Just chiming up with a little defense for runboard here, folks. *grins*

Thor, the owner of runboard, has been programming the message board software from scratch - so it's nothing like other forum software. As it is, he's open for suggestions, to be put in at Runboard Support.

So far, runboard is run on four servers, all owned by Thor himself. He has paid for them, and is paying for the traffic the boards create out of his own pocket - with a bit of aid from the google ads and the premium fees.

There is simply no space for runboard to host pictures - it would be way too expensive. As runboard grows, this may change, but not in the forseeable future.

It might be possible to restrict avatar sizes by board rule here, but I fear it would be very hard to enforce. Signatures are bad enough - on other boards there are plenty of problems with those as well.

I'm not asking for the boards to host the images, I'm aware of the cost of that.
I just think it would be cool to have avatars like other forums, but most other forums allow you to not display everyones avatars and lets the board owners control file size etc.

Ah, I see.

So far, the only control with avatars here on Runboard is to restrict their visual size (to 60x60 pixel), not their file size.

Please, if you want more avatar control, suggest it on Runboard Support, in the Feature Requests Forum. Thor keeps improving Runboard and has often implemented suggestions from users - and you know best what you would like to have.
