When things just don't go right....

So, I'm supposed to be going to a concert tonight, Symphony X with Devin Townsend opening. At the Worcestor Palladium upstairs, for those that are familar with Mass. But then, the other day, the guy I was going with bailed out on me, as he was going hunting and didn't think he would be back in time. Ok, that's a pain, and now I have two tickets and looks like I'm going solo. And then, it turns out my daughter's sports awards night is tomight as well. So I can give up the concert altogether, and lose the money and the opportunity to see this band I've wanted to see, or go, by myself, and feel like I'm being a crap father.

So instead of being excited about going to a great show, instead its all just a downer. Kinda sucks either way.

My daughter would come first. In a years time the concert is forgotten or they come around again. The act of being there when your daughter is getting awards, or her team or whatever the case may be has a lasting impression.
Go with your daughter!

Yes, that's pretty much the decision I had made, and just for the reasons you said. You have to be there for your kids.

It's just the falling apart of plans that's a pain. Of course, that's just me whining, I'll stop now.

The ceremony can't run that late. I'm sure you'd be able to catch most of the headliner. Hell bring your daughter and tell her to forget about the awards!

Well, I went to the awards, and while she doesn't say much about it (she is a 15 year old teenage girl, after all, can't say nice things to Dad) I do think she appreciated the fact that I made that choice. She played J.V. Volleyball, and her team won the first J.V. playoffs the league has held. I tried to make all her games, and I think she like the fact that we are some of the very few parents who go watch their kids play. It amazes me how many parents ignore their kids sports. It's like they say "Well, it's only J.V. girl's volleyball, it's not like it's football or anything". Whatever.

Spills, just so you know, I have brought my daughter to a number of concerts, including DP. And she has hated everyone. There's no hope for her taste in music, no matter how hard I try. And the show was an hour away, I did consider trying to get there late, but just too far and too late to do so. Not a bad idea though.

And Christos, from your remark, it seems you have at least heard of Symphony X. That's a very rare thing, most don't even know the name, never mind the music!

Thanks for listening guys, it's nice to have a sounding board!

A veruy good choice. When I was a kid my Dad used to come after work to all of our football and soccer practices. He and Mom also made all of the games and sometimes I had aunts and uncles show up. It leaves a lasting impression and let's you know they care.
On the other hand I have a brother In-Law who forced his three sons into playing Little League, pretty much against their wishes. To make it worse, he was always too busy to go see them play. It might have been different if he "had" to work, but it was always him volunteering to help his rich uncle do work on his house thinking that someday he would get a large inheritance. He never had time on the weekends to even play catch with them. He needless to say, never went to any of the little league games and they ended up hating my Bro-In-laws favorite sport. He made them play little league mostly so they could get rich and take care of him in his later years. I used to take them camping and play hockey with them and actually paid attention to them. At family get togethers I was always off doing stuff with the kids while the parents talked useless bullshit. Well, the kids have alienated their Dad now and just laugh at him when he tries to give out discipline and want nothng to do with him anymore while they started to play Ice Hockey in leagues and used to come to my Ice Hockey games. It drives my Bro In-law crazy with jealousy now, but he made his own bed. BTW, when his rich uncle died, he got squat.
It's these little things that loom large and make a lasting impression.
