Re: I hate pop-ups! What's the best solution??
I'm not sure that just disabling Java Applets is enough. You also need to disable Active Scripting (in IE, or JavaScript in Navigator). Doing this will also disable all the clever site tricks like drop-down menus and animations.
Version 1 of the Google Toolbar had some horrendous security vulnerabilities that allowed hackers to take control of your computer. I don't know if any problems still exist in version 2 reports so far are favourable.
If I'm going to a site which I know has heavy popups (e.g. geocities ) I use an old version of the Mosaic browser. It's a perfectly good browser but it doesn't support JavaScript so the popups don't work. And if the page has other JavaScript elements that stop working... well, tough, I probably didn't want to see them anyway

I'm not using Internet Exploder because it is inferior to Mozilla. Just start using the newest version of Mozilla, it has pop-up filter built in, and it works like a dream.

Ok....I've got the definitive and final answer to your prayers. I am using panicware's free pop up blocker. It's a godsend really, and surfing the net has gotten so much better with it. If I need a feature of a website, such as Hotmail's Address book to load, which is blocked by the pop up blocker, all you do is hold down the control button to access it. You can also click on the white hand on the bottom task bar to turn it off. It's a lot easier to hit the control button a couple of times a day than it is to have to deal with all those orrible ads!!!!! There's no java applets to disable, and no annoying webbrowsers to download. Here's the website:

Thanks all round - I've gone with JohnH's solution, and it does seem to work pretty well. A very quick download, and the slight inconvenience of having an extra button push or two to open up my address book in Yahoo is well worth it. Other than that, it's doing exactly what it says on the tin!
Bye-bye pop-ups!!
And I ain't gonna miss them a bit!

Re: I hate pop-ups! What's the best solution??
a little late I know but the ultimate solution is to download Opera 7 for your browsing, it has google built in, it has a pop up stopper that will stop all pop up's 'cept those you have requested ( like your yahoo thingy ) and its skinable...oh and a lot faster the iE. It come with a banner, but that can easely be removed by paying a small amount...or if you know where to look, then...

Opera, Mozilla, and Netscape 7 (yuk) has POP-UP killers. They are very effective. But if you are using XP, as I recall, they also allow a special kind of POP-UP's, which can be a bit trickier to get rid of, because they actually goes through the OS and not through the browser.

Do you mean the alerts that use the Messenger service? You can also be attacked by those in Windows 2000. They are incredibly annoying But easy to get rid of -- you just set the service so it never starts automatically.

Yes that's probably the one I think of, and is apparently not as difficult to get rid of, as I had been led to believe.
