Football...PROPER football
What's happened to the footie talk this season??
I accept it was an iffy start to the season for many on here. Magpies inept, Gooners hilariously crap in Europe (no surprise there), Chairboys managerless and bottom of D2, Reds lost 2 already and that's with Rio on drugs: how many more would we have lost if he had been sober?
However things are now on the UP!
Newcastle have had a fine month
Arse won in Europe tonight (albeit 88th min)
Wycombe have a new mgr (& joy of joys I can blame mcp if he's useless )
So, no excuses, lets have some football topics on here if you please, you lazy sods!

If you guys would get a pool going, it might make it more interesting. Then again, Pony would probably rob you blind!

Re: Football...PROPER football
I thought proper football was the one played with the oval shaped ball, played by men in pads?

Yes, I do believe a good game of football can also be had with an oval shaped ball....but I'm not thinking of the one in which pads are worn

Re: Football...PROPER football
Funnily enough, I thought of doing a footie topic this week too, but didn't get round to it! There is so much I could moan about with Newcastle so I'm better off keeping it to myself!
A fine month on the surface but the realisty is less warming! We've only played three games this season of good football. 3-2 v Fulham, 5-0 v Breda, and 3-0 v Portsmouth. The other wins (what few there have been) have been a bit scraped out.
We got knocked out of the Carling Cup by West Brom (that's the last time I go to a league cup match. I was there last year too, when Everton beat us on penalties in the same round!), we got beat by Partizan Belgrade on penalties (hell I was there too!) and have lost to some poor teams in general!
The best thing in recent weeks is that Robert and Bowyer have actually started to play well!
For a team that finished third last season, we did bugger all to improve on that. You can't stand still. We should have been mounting a challenge this season. Instead we preferred to sign one player on a free transfer, and for yet another season, decided to over-rely on Alan Shearer once more. If the club waits until Shearer needs a walking stick, we'll be going back even further! We have to help him out now. Not just wait till he retires and then think '!@#$...who do we play up front now!'

Re: Football...PROPER football
So who would you bring in to support Shearer?
Today's paper has it that Fergie has been given £20m for a foil to Van Nistelroy when the Jan window opens, but is there anyone actually out there?
Defoe and Saha are named amongst the usual suspects. Also an Ajax player, Van der Vaart (I think) who I haven't come across before.

Re: Football...PROPER football
We had Saha at Newcastle briefly and he always impressed then, certainly in terms of having bags of potential. I think it's taken him longer to get going than I expected though. But he is certainly a player who could probably develop better in a quality team like Man United.
Not sure if another striker should be a priority though. Diego Forlan is now looking like a good player!
As for Newcastle, the player I want most would be Patrick Kluivert. He's had a torrid time at Barca recently and is available cheap. His goalscoring record speaks for itself. Phenomenal.
But would he want to come? I doubt it. Despite being guaranteed first team football, he'd probably prefer to get himself on the pay roll of 'glamour' club Chelsea and sit on the bench for half their matches! That's the draw of London.
We may have had a chance in pre-season, when we were the third best team in England and about to get in the Champions League. But that's gone tits up now, we'll probably be looking to sign another dodgy Frenchman.
I'll take Defoe too. James Beattie and Eider Gudjohnson are a bit useful as well!
But have we the money? Without Champions League football, probably not.

Re: Football...PROPER football
The hippie's having a good run, but he's still away off being a reliable top drawer striker.
Kluivert would be a good choice but I think your prognosis of his likely destination is I fear correct. And there's the rub, because if a team can't attract a star buy, then what else is there to fall back on?
The fact is that since money took over it appears that there whilst there may be a few promising names either breaking through or doing ok in mid table outfits (Wright Phillips, Rooney, Defoe would all be examples) there just isn't the club developed talent coming through these days that we once took for granted.
