Re: The "Listening to my cd collection" thread

Ok, today is actually a double header, being AC/DC, Back In Black and Live. Since I know Back In Black so well, I am listening to it now, but already have strong opinions on it, so I'm going to do the "Live" album as well. This will finish up my AC/DC collection.

Back In Black. What can be said except that this must be THE party album. And an awesome album it is. Hell's Bells, Shoot To Thrill, Back In Black, Shook Me All Night Long, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, all classic songs. And the rest is great as well. This album rocks from start to end. If I have to tell someone one AC/DC album to get, this is it.

Grade: A

I will post comments on "Live" after a listen later on.

So, the item at hand is AC/DC "Live". Not a bad cd, gives all the greatest hits in one package, contains the version of Thunderstruck that I've heard on the radio for ages, lots of material in one cd.

Now, Ali and someone else (I can't recall) told me they weren't real crazy about this cd. I actually like, but there are flaws. I find the first half of the cd sounds much better than the second. From Hell's Bells onward there is stuff that I start to find distracting. The guitar on the Hells's Bell intro is WAY too distorted, it just sounds muddled. Some of the songs start to sound rushed, and the vocals start to lose distintion. I didn't notice this on the first half of the disc. It's too bad, because it's a great show up to that point.

Grade: B+ Has good points, but loses it towards the end.

No, for that I would have to borrow my daughters copy of the cd's, and THAT'S not going to happen! By default of being in the house, I have to listen to that way too much as it is.

Now, looking at pictures of her on the cover of Rolling Stone with nothing but a guitar covering her, that I may do!

Actually, today is...Aerosmith - Get A Grip.

I am not a huge Aerosmith fan in general, although I liked some of their earlier '70's stuff. Somewhere along the line, I bought this cd. And you know what? I like it, MTV ballads and all. Eat The Rich, Fever, and Livin' On The Edge are a great opening trio of songs. I even like all the schmucky ballads like Crying, Crazy and Amazing. Some of the songs near the end of the cd start to sound a little like filler, but by that point it's ok.

Some may say they are sellouts to MTV, but this is good album anyway you look at it.

Grade: A-

Not entirely sure what you're trying to say there, Larry. emoticon

That said, today's entry is another Aerosmith album, Nine Lives. First of, let it be said that I didn't buy this album, I got it from my son when he cleaned out his cd's after his punk conversion. I think I had listened to it only once before today, so I had no real impression of this cd. I don't think it was a big winner for Aerosmith. So impressions...overall, this is a harder rocking album than the one I talked about yesterday, Get A Grip, fewer ballands, more rockers, some of which are ok. There are a few songs you've may have heard, Falling In Love, Taste of India and Pink, and all are catchy enough. Say what you will about the state of Aerosmith, the songs that get played all have hooks, and stick in mind when they are done. The problem here is that rest of the album, while a decent rocker, is for the most part just generic Aerosmith. You've heard it all before, you'll probably here it again. It's not bad, but it doesn't make me say, Hey, I need to here that again. A side note, EVERY song on the albums has co-writing credits from someone outside the band.

Grade: B. Not bad, just a bit bland, nothing to draw you back in for another listen. Doesn't annoy while you're listening to it, but leaves no lasting impression.

Now, on to the next album, which is much better...Alice In Chains - Dirt! Comments coming soon.
