posticon Joe Lynn Turner performing the classics

Im currently listening to Deep Purple Live Hamburg 17/02/91 and I have only listened to Burn and Black Night so far. Joe really makes a mess of the Burn lyrics. He sings Glenn Hughes parts as this "You Know we'll never learn, we could not even cry" He also cocks up the rest of the song .I think Joe is a great singer but no so great when it comes to singing Purple classics !

Not that I think he was perfect but at least he had a courage to do tracks from each line up unlike Gillan who is butchering his own classics most of the time and hever had balls to do MK3 tune. These days anyway, Turner's pretty good with Coverdale's tunes as HTP shows and Undecover 2 CD show.

Courage to perform a variety of songs, well possibly. But he still managed to butcher them! On the evidence I have (three shows from the tour) and particularly the Ostrava DVD he is absolutley appaling. On his own songs he is adaquate, just, but on Burn and the Gillan tunes he is terrible.

Granted Gillan can sound like !@#$, but with Turner I have never heard him sound good - especially not in DP.

one of the reason that i dont like him is cos the classics slaughter that he did several times at mk5. he didnt a great job at old rainbow and the same story repeat itself at DP.

I´m sorry, but I think, that Coverdale sounded even worse than Turner in Gillan´s songs!

I feel that JLT gets unfairly bashed. He was put in to do a very difficult job, and he does perform well for his own style of music, but not Gillans. I don't really like the way Coverdale did Smoke or Highway Star either.

Same old song again emoticon it´s completely diferent for each one of them ! Ian Gillan is the legenday MK2 singer, considered the best Deep Purple line up ... why should he sing stuff after him ? Ofcourse Joe had to sing older stuff ... can you imagine Deep Purple touring and playing S&M live only ? Ian Gillan IS the older stuff , MK3 and even more MK4 are great line ups , but i don´t think Gillan has to sing any of those songs ! I probably wouldn´t if i was in his place ! emoticon

Rock On

I agree.

And for the Gillan/MK III songs subject: Does anyone seriously want to hear Steve Morse play Burn ? I would have been interested to hear Ian sing Burn when Ritchie was in, but nowadays ... ?

I agreed, Burn with Morse must be terrible as smoke on the water.
