Mr. Big Influences & Connections short review..

I recently got this one and I've been playing it quite a lot the last few days so I thought I'd post a few thoughts about it here. If you manage to disregard the rather dubious concept of a band covering itself this one's definitely worth looking out for...

The CD -European version- features JLT and Glenn Hughes on 2 tracks each (Colorado Bulldog, Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy & Price You Gotta Pay, Alive and Kickin' respectively) with both of them doing fabulous work on the stuff of a very underrated band IMO (which with the right push and direction could have been classic rock's answer to Dream Theater, instead of a one-hit wonder hair band remembered for To Be With You alone).

Glenn in particular is in awesome form and seems to have picked two songs that are very very suitable to his voice, all those soul/funky vocal phrases are wheeled out and given a good thrashing, to great effect, on both tunes.

JLT on the other side has picked two very uptempo rocking tracks and while being very faithful to Eric Martin's vocal stylings on them he still adds something of his own to the renditions.

The disc also has some other singing of outstanding quality, especially from Paul Rodgers (who covers his own self on the Free's Mr Big!) and Heart's Ann Wilson who attempts a very heartfelt take of Promise Her The Moon (probably my favourite Mr Big ballad). Favourite guest spot of a non-singing fella on the album would have to be Yngwie's predictable effort of soloing all over one of the tracks (which also has JLT on it, so you get a mini Odyssey reunion too! emoticon), without seemingly knowing where to stop or indeed even start(!emoticon), great stuff! emoticon

A short making-of type of video file is also included which has shots of Glenn in the studio and JLT offering his opinion on the band the tribute is for (don't worry, no footsteps or drivel remarks here! emoticon)... All in all, Hughes and Joelene fans who also dig Mr. Big could do much worse than picking this one up!
