Re: A tribute forum?
Eddie Murhy go home! David, your use of sarcasm is outstanding, brilliant and refreshing! No, I really mean that!
In this case though you rather effectivly killed off the only contributer making this thread into an actual discussion... and... well, I always feel extremely guilty when I have done something like that, but that's me. Never mind. No reason to keep any discussion going, is it?

Re: A tribute forum?
Well, I can't say much about Purple tribute bands or how good and bad they are, but I wanted to say this, anyway:
I quite agree with Phoenix, I often hear an old hit on the radio which has been "covered" by some upstart band, even "modernized" with a dreadful beat or played faster. It sells under the old name, living off the old legend. That makes me angry, because in my eyes it is cheating and misusing good stuff. And yes, in those cases I think that they either wanted to make quick money or were too lazy to develop their own style.
None of this has to apply to bands you are talking about - I just don't know them well enough.
I also liked David's mention of classical music. I think the difference there is that those orchestra don't make big money out of it and they don't steal the fame of those composers, either, they always mention the source, so to speak. Do you know "Rondo Veneziano"? They are similar to those cover bands I hate, taking Mozart and playing it like modern pop - "modern" classics.

Re: A tribute forum?
I usually hate it when a "pop" group takes a song I love, changes it, and plays it badly. A "tribute" band is a different thing, though. They acknowledge their influences and proudly state, "we are a [ Deep Purple | Pink Floyd | Abba | Wombles | whatever ] tribute band". They will usually play the songs faithfully to the original versions. They do it not because they are lazy but (I assume) because they love the songs they are playing. And it fills a need in today's market. Real rock music was made to be played live (a completely different ethic to today's synthetic pop). Yet many of the bands loved by people on this forum have split up, retired, or rarely tour. So tribute bands fill a useful hole -- they provide a chance to experience the songs as they may have been played back in the 60s or 70s when our favourite bands were in their primes.
And for that reason, I see a lot of similarity with what a symphony orchestra does.

Ok, I'll be accused of double standards here because I said I usually hate it when a "pop" group takes a song I love, changes it, and plays it badly, but now I'm going to say I love it when a rock group takes classical music and does that same thing (Er... as long as they play it well, not badly!)
I think rock arrangements of classical music can be very good (note, "can be" -- they can also be terrible!) I love classical music, and I don't think rock bands can play it *better* than an orchestra, but what they can do (if they are clever and skillful enough) is produce something equally as good -- but different.
Deep Purple borrowed extensively from classical influences. Their early albums had classical snippets scattered throughout them. I've seen them play "Beethoven's 9th Symphony" live several times. Was it better than seeing the LSO and a choir playing it? No! Was it *bad*? Absolutely not, it was brilliant... it was just... different

I have a jazz rendition of some Beethoven piece, and it is brilliant. It has depth and dynamics and listening to it is pure fun. Or take the way Apocalyptica play "The Hall of the Mountain King" by Edward Grieg. I even love recognizing classical snippets in modern music - often in film music, too. But when a "pop" group takes something that I love and turns it into mush - well. We both hate it, I suppose.
Oh, and thanks for explaining the difference between real "tribute" bands and those that simply steal a song.
