Re: JLT - How much do 'first impressions' count?
I know you love Glenn Rahul but my point of view is this,
he has all the talent in the world but he suffer's from an erratic use of that talent.
A singer can be great if they have enough talent,
how well they use it is the key to their success.
Having said that,I really don't care how successful he is
but for some reason the masses do.
It's great to see him blowing other singer's offstage these day's,and when it may be too late for the masses
it's not too late for us.
We are lucky we can enjoy him at all, with the market
(especially here in the U.S.)
as fickle as it is,I'm just happy he's making music still.

Re: JLT - How much do 'first impressions' count?
He did suffer from an erratic use of his talent. But that's in the past. It is probably the reason why has has been held back in his career (along with the drug problem of course)!
He's been making a string of high quality solo albums over the last ten years that show he's finally making up for lost time, and channelling that talent in the right direction!!
And live, he does surpass anything I've ever seen! He's incredible!

Re: JLT - How much do 'first impressions' count?
My first impression came from seeing the video for I Surrender on "Top of the Pops" - I thought he was a girl.
I first saw him "live" on the DTC tour, but like everyone else, I was watching the guitarist, and so didn't really notice him. It was when I started to acquire the bootlegs of the US tour in '81 that I really began to notice how annoying his between-songs banter could be.
Then the LBTE video was released, where he was playing to the camera even more than the guitarist . What a poser. Anyway, I managed to survive 6 shows on the BOOS tour by watching the guitarist...oh, and Roger during the guitarist's power cut at Nottingham.
I bought S&M when it was released but was not impressed, and took a 7 year sabbatical from all things Purple . This meant that I missed the '91 tour. However, last week I received my Ostrava DVD and so saw his Purple debut and wondered what the hell had happened to him - his voice? ...those pants? ...and far more annoying than at any time in the 80s . Maybe it was the drugs? The worst thing about the Ostrava recording is that the director obviously didn't know who Purple were, resulting in far too much unnecessary camera time being given to JLT and not enough to "The Man In Blue" (Blue? What happened to black?).
To end on a more positive note, I re-acquired S&M today (having lost my original when my CD collection was stolen in '99)....and it sounds OK now - I must be getting old .
