How do you post a "PERSONAL ICON" on your user settings?

In my "miscellaneous settings", I see above the "signature field", a field for "personal icon".

Looked easy enough, so I went to Google Images and picked a picture that I liked. I copied the URL from the "properties box", and typed it in the "personal icon" field.

Well as usual with me and pictures.....IT DIDN'T WORK!!! emoticon

Has anyone else tried to play around with the Personal Icon function? Are these the little square pictures that show up in the left-margins, under the usernames in people's posts?

If you look at the main Akheva/Runboard forum, you'll see guys like Thor and the others who really know how to utilize the features, have it down to a science.

What does it mean when they say "60 x 60 Pixels (Optional)"?

Does that mean I have to choose an image that has pixel numbers less than 60? If so, that doesn't give me much choice, as it seems all the Search Engine Images on Google have 3-digit pixel numbers...nothing <60.

A lot of questions...

OK, the picture for your avatar (also called personal icon) must be hosted on another server - one that allows hotlinking. Most of the free ones don't because that takes a lot of bandwidth. (I have mine on a private homepage that is paid for.) In the support forum you can find a number of names for useful servers (Villagephotos and Angelfire). Then you can enter that url into your settings.

60x60 is the size for the avatars here on the boards. The picture you choose can be autoresized (that's the option you mentioned) - but that often has curious effects. The best thing you could do is make your own picture that already is 60x60. Do you use Photoshop? There is a function to change picture size.

Does that help?

I disabled that option from this board, because there are so many users with slow connections.
If people want to use avatars someone could set up a poll (there was one sometime ago) concerning them.

Right. Now I see that I don't see it. Silly me.

I don't mind, Nico. Still maybe b3burner wants one for another forum.

Nah! Forget it. Sounds like a lot of effort for very little return.

And if it isn't available here, oh well. I thought maybe it was available all along, and I just didn't know how to access it. I'm always curious how to make use of features I've never used before, but if they don't apply to the forum, then there's no point in worrying about it.

Thanks for your prompt reply to my question. I appreciate your follow-up.
