Re: How to get "alternate" symbols out of an American computer keyboard?
Most helpful about the £ sign as mine has gone missing. I don't know what I did to the keyboard but all my symbols have changed around and now i have to hold down shift+2 to get the @ sign. Does anyone know how I can get it all back to where it was?

start->run->command
format c:
reinstall Windows
.

.
.
Please note, do not do this, unless you want to delete your entire c-drive.

You could follow MrSnip's helpful suggestion, but he uses a primitive operating system that doesn't let you easily change your keyboard layout. Luckily, you have useful tools in Windows that let you do just that
The process is slightly different for each version of Windows, so if what I write below makes no sense, tell me which version you have and I'll try to be more specific.
1. Open "Control Panel"
2. Open the "Keyboard" program from the control panel.
3. Select the thing called "Input Locales" (or similar).
4. In the list of langauges, you will see you have something weird selected (probably US English). Change this to UK English.

Actually, my operating system is primitive. The ideas was invented back in the '60ies (correct me if I'm wrong). My operating system is so primitive it can be run from 1 (one) cdrom, giving me my webserver, mailserver, Image Manipulation Program and Office suite (among others).
But true David's probably got the right solution for you, once he knows, exactly which edition of your operating system you're running. Remember, it's not enough to know it's called Windows!
brgds MrSnip, who loves it when ones primitive operating system doesn't change behaviour just because of a wrong click of the mouse

I think you're probably right.

Yeah, but thank god I don't also have to ask "and what shell are you using?". At least the Windows version is printed on the box

Sorry it took a while to answer your PM, life is kind of hectic at the moment and I'm not caught up with everything.
