Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
As an overall show, Tokyo has some pretty good moments but as far as Bolin's concerned forget about it. He can hardly strum a chord during most of it, Burn for example is laughable at best. Guitar-wise the US show is much better.

Highway Star is a bitchin' 3 piece, musically,Tommy just standing there doing windmills.Thing is,with the echo, phaser and all of that volume,it must have sounded like a jet taking off every time he hit a note.Good cover, the crowd hardly seems to notice.

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
I'd have to say the Foxbat/Knig Biscuit show is the best. Tommy seems in much finer form and that version of Stormbringer has never failed to give me chills. He was really playing his heart out on that version.

Chris, about Stormbringer solos: it seems Tommy doesn't start his solo, so Lord starts one. Then Tommmy gets back and ends up playing about 1,5 solos!
Listening to it tonight on the truck steareo,it sounds like Jon's Hammond packs up,Coverdale sounds to be giving Bolin an audible to start another solo during the rhythm bit.

Yeah, that's how it sounds (just listened to it): the Hammond disappears during the first solo verse, and Bolin takes over. Then during the chorus, Hammond is audible for a whil and then goes out again, and Tommy plays another solo. The Hammond again returns for the chorus and then out again. Then no keyboard sound, except for in the very end of the track.

The Hammond is very weak while Tommy is noodling on the rhythm, then comes up dramatically in the mix at the end of the second solo, then drops out again. Its pretty weird.Tommy pretty much plays the same solo twice.A similar incident occured in Finland in 2000 during Fireball, and Morse comes to the rescue, making it a very different Fireball.Very odd sounding solo from Steve too.

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
I have to say that besides the remastered version of the Miami show which is probably has the best balance between sound quality and good performance, the best DP MkIV boot I have is the one from Sydney; good sound and the band is having a ball, way better than "Taste It Down Under", which is a lot weaker. A shame that the second Melbourne show, the NYC and Philly boots don't have the same sound quality, as those are all really great performances, with ace guitar playing and solid performances from the entire band.
I just wish those master tapes that one hears rumors of from time to time will eventually turn up... oh, well, I'll get to hear them when I'm 80 I guess!
By the way, thanks so much Chris for helping me get my collection started some years back!

Philly and the second Melbourne were the shows to be at,along with Miami for sure. It's a shame that Tokyo tends to be standard bearer for this lineup, when they played several excellent shows.Mind you,if you're a person that cannot accept a Blackmoreless Purple its a mute point.
Gord,is that you?Glad I could help,I still love this lineup and the sound they generated, even when the actual performance was some times lacking.
