Tokyo vs. Long Beach
This question pops up every now and then: whoch Mk4 live album do you prefer, TTA or Foxbat/King Bisquit?
While Tommy is smoking in Long Beach (esp. Stormbringer and Owed to 'G') and Glenn's bass is very well up the mix, making Gettin' Tighter sound extra funky, I have to go for TTA.
Lord is phenomenal on that recording, with two brilliant solos, among favourite solos by him ever, in GT and YKOM. And strangely enough, the sound is warmer on TTA, and I really like the version of Wild Dogs - somehow the situation and the condition of TB fit the song very well!

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
This is a tougher question - for me - than it may appear to be on the surface...I'll have to give eah a re-listen over the weekend before I cast my vote...I know, I know - I could vote from memory, but givinf each a re-listen is a more fun way to choose!

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
Haven't got TTA. I had the Liverpool boot for two years before I finally had the courage to listen to it. So many wonderful recordings of Bolin out there, that I struggle to find the desire to hear a recording of one of my favourite musicians in trouble.
I've heard some decent things about TTA, so I should pick it up, though for now, Long Beach and In Deep Grief are good live reminders of MK4. Haven't listened to Last Concert in Japan in years.

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
TTA definitely does have a better sound quality, but the Bolin playing is just so ragged in spots that it depresses me. "Lazy" is one that pains me. Glenn and David are not in top vocal form either. I sure do agree that the "Wild Dogs" is potent, and it is also cool to hear so many mark IV songs played live.

"Foxbat" (Long Beach) & the "In Deep Grief" boot are stellar examples of MkIV live. "In Deep Grief" is just one more example of a MkIV boot that would've served MkIV & the fans as a fitting testimonial to the band.
Anyhow, I'd personally reccomend that you continue to stay away from "Last Concert In Japan". Worthwhile only insofar as it's 'historical' signifigance, in my non-humble opinion. One the few live DP recordings that he was involved with that for some reason Martin Birch totally botched (see the thread/topic on the Bolin board for my further elaboration/questions/theories as to why this was). "This Time Around" is far, far better representation of the Tokyo concert, in all respects, particularly as to how Bolin is/was represented in the final mix when compared to "Last Concert In Japan".

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
I prefer Foxbat over TTA,but strangely, like a couple of the posters have mentioned above,Wild Dogs is gripping and, considering what Tommy was going through at the time, rather ironic and sad.IMHO,Foxbat showed MKIV in a more favorable light and kind of points towards a comfort-level seemingly achieved between the groups various, diverse talents and personalities.I don't have the In Deep Grief boot(yet),but I'm starting to think about getting it.CHEERS

Actually, there's some good stuff from Tommy on that show,as he got the rap when most of the problem wasn't him.Homeward Strut is aces on both Jon and Tommy's part. The solo does fall apart, but the pause and general structure of the solo is the same from night to night on all of the shows from that leg.The show sucks, but it's mostly Glenn and David.
I like the sound of TTA,ie: you get a full blast of Tomm'ys tone/setup,but the show is pretty dire, although it has it's moments.Stormbringer works in spite of itself, and what happened to Jon on his solo?Foxbat the better of the two.

Re: Tokyo vs. Long Beach
Chris, about Stormbringer solos: it seems Tommy doesn't start his solo, so Lord starts one. Then Tommmy gets back and ends up playing about 1,5 solos!

I never did get that one, back when I just had the bootleg, but the stereo mix Jon drops off for a bit,and is real weak under Tommy's solo and then his Hammond just comes blaring up in the mix toward the last part of the second solo;I thought the Hammond might have packed up.David sounds like he's giving Tommy an audible cue to do another solo at one point.Who knows. In Glasgow,Jon and Tommy play their solos at the same time during Burn and then come time for Tommy's solo he just plays a rhythm. The soundman had a field day trying to decide who was supposed to be up in the mix before dropping Bolin down. Its sadly funny.
