"Send email" vs. "Send a PM": Which is better?

I have never gotten a PM, and I see they only have a capacity of 5 in the inbox, so what's the advantage to receiving a message on your PM verses your email, which can hold hundreds of messages in the inbox?

How do I know which is better, and if I'm sending a non-forum message to someone I've never sent to before, how do I know which one they prefer to receive it on?

If you "send e-mail", the PM just goes to the receivers e-mail, and if you "send a PM", it goes to the inbox (which holds 5 PM's) and the receiver gets a note about this to his/hers e-mail. So there's not much difference. I think e-mail option is better, PM's are just clumsy and inbox can only hold 5 of them.

You can also unsubscribe from getting noticed about inbox messeages, so then there´s a difference.

Yes, I do. For stuff that is off-Forum, personal or admin. Or if a conversation is better continued in private.

Space Trucker,

It has nothing to do with not being liked. I believe everyone likes everyone here. Everyone in their own unique way has something special to bring to the "Deep Purple picnic".

I can't speak for others, but for me, I'm intimidated to send someone a personal message, unless I feel it's important or warranted. That thing at the top that says "abuse of this feature will result in immediate termination of your membership", scares the !@#$ out of me! I don't want anyone to think I'm harrassing them. Only people whom I've gotten to know bantering back and forth on the boards do I feel appropriate sending them private stuff.

Of course as I become more comfortable with the forum as a whole, don't be surprised if I have more to say to members in a PM. I'm just a little shy and conservative, and it takes me awhile to feel at ease approaching people.

However, the opposite could be true, where a topic becomes so individualized between two people, that to talk about it infront of 300 people, could be inappropriate as well, so I guess it just depends on the circumstances.

If it makes you feel any better, I'll send you a PM, okay?

Of course, and wouldn't you know it? I'm so gullable as to take you literally.

But did you get my PM?
