Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
Ali mentions roadies dying in rather odd circumstances,I believe Patsy was murdered and no one here can change my belief.

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
But you CAN change your underwear!
I will have to re-visit "Live Between the Eyes." As I recall, and it has been many years, it was during Ritchie's "live noise" phase; lots of whammy abuse and blips and blurbs, but not so much coherent playing as in the 70's. I remember "Power" being a particularly rough ride, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing...

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
It was an exciting gig nevertheless, the mood was good and the performance speaks for itself,my laser disc copy is of high quality and that helps the sound and picture.
Change my underwear???
Why?,do you want to watch or something??

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
Back to topic, ay?
Ali Tait has a good point. In retrospect those days must have been great, but none in the band has since said it was any good, have they?
Lord and Paice wanted to quit when Blackmore left. I think they should have done that. Neither Hughes or Bolin was mature enough players to handle that cake. And the cost of their experience made Deep Purple into a flop!

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
Yes, I agree that Lord + Paice should've called it a day when Blackmore left, if that was how they felt at the time. The retrospective "We allowed ourselves to be yalked into continuing against our better judgement" just never held much water with me.
The whole period is kinda filled with contradictory feelings - most expressed post-MkIV, obviously. They both highly praise Bolin's work with the band during the summer sessions at Pirate Sound (the subsequent release of the wonderful "Days May Come" + "1420 Beachwood Drive" recordings do bear this out) and his input and work in helping to create "Come Taste The Band". But by the following March (and for years afterward), there weren't many complimentary things being said.
I've often wondered what apparently went wrong between the finishing of "Come Taste The Band" and the start of the subsequent world tour rehearsals, when Bolin was admonished (according to him) for taking the few MkII/III numbers that were to be retained for the tour sets and putting his own stamp on them. Didn't Bolin say he actually taped a note to his microphone in the studio (and possibly on stage?) reminding himself to do the MkII/III material "note for note"?

Maybe he finally realized what band he'd actually agreed to join? And who's boots he either would have to fill or try'n replace...
Come Taste The Band has some qualities. So do Black Sabbath's Born Again. But Bolin did never fit in Purple more than Gillan did fit in Sabbath.
If it doesn't work live it's not rock!

Thing is, it did work live when the band were cooking. It's just the other factors that got in the way.

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
As you might remember, Rahul, even this old horse has complimented MkIV's live performances...I even liked - and still do - the MkIV version of "Highway Star" with the interploation of "Not Fade Away"!
I realize your last comment wasn't intended for me, but I just wanted to toss that in there anyway.

What factors are you refering to?
To me purple didn't never work really well live without the villain in black to keep the troops collected. The Hughes&Bolin pair was more often than not a disaster on stage. And it's a shame, I'm convinced the talent was there, it's just so bloody hard to seperate it from all the foolery.
The Bolin tune Wild Dogs worked pretty ok, I think. On good days.

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
There were several factors in the way,
I'll let Rahul list them since I only know of the obvious factors. He is a pretty big Bolin fan.
