Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
I'm no Bolinoid but I'll extend my respect and add that any advanced search of these forums will turn up no disrespect toward his soul and may he rest in peace.
I have however expressed my concern or lack of it toward the mkIV lineup in general but it has nothing to do with Tommy and everything to do with Purple's way of carrying on at that time.
It's the other two I hold reservaions about
but thats of course a whole other topic.

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
I will just add that it is so unfortunate that Bolin's best-known work, besides "Spectrum" obviously, was/is with Purple. While I love CTTB and "FOxbat," they just don't show what the guy was really capable of, and "LCIJ" left an understandably lousy taste in many guitar fans' mouths. Many people wrote off Bolin for his Purple work. What a tragedy! Jim S

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
Bolin is highly overrated! Ok, he did some good recordings here and where, but that was hardly rock. Live with Deep Purple was horrible! And if it doesn't work live it's not good!

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
As I used to tell my pals in college who would laugh at my "Live Between the Eyes" video, you can't judge a musician by his low point only. There are some GREAT live recordings of Bolin playing what is most DEFINITELY rock, it's just that TTA ain't it. I do think there is some good stuff on Foxbat though!
But check out "Ebbets Field 1974" or "Tommy Bolin and Energy Live" or "Zephyr Live." Or the Bolin Band's "First Time Live." They will clarify the point that was made above; Bolin had some great playing, but the shame of it is that his most well-known work is with that well-known band, Deep Purple.
I would actually argue that TB is underrated. I don't see his name mentioned all too often outside of Bolinoid circles. Now and then there is a mention in the press. I have read some of his old partners praise him, and some scattered musicians of more recent times too, but I don't see his name rated too often at all. Bummer! Jim S

I hope it wasn't Ritchie that your college friends were laughing at Jim.
I can see them laughing at JLT though
how bunk can you get,Ritchie played so well that night that even JLT couldn't completely ruin things...almost though.

Re: The "Disrespect" shown towards Tommy Bolin
The CTTB tour may not have been Purple's best, but it was pure rock 'n' roll!! I mean you have a band with members completely out of it on drugs, other members drinking heavily, drug dealers trying to get on to the band's plane, roadies dying in rather odd circumstances, hotels getting wrecked, band members nicking each others girlfriends and crowds getting pissed coz Blackmore aint there!! You have to hand it to them, it was one hell of a tour!!

Interesting take, Ali, interesting. And so true if one chooses to look at it that way.
