Yes he does. If it wasn't for drugs, I think he would have been up there with Blackmore, Hendryx, Clapton and Page.

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
In some ways everyone "deserves' a modicum of respect...Bolin just wasn't around long enough to have earned more. In some ways, I think his tragic, too-early demise has maybe earned him some undeserved stature.
Sorry,I forgot to say that respect is an earned thing, deserving it is hardly an issue, for me.

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
He merits respect for helping to make a great album CTTB has some great guitar work, great songs on the whole a great effort. Would have loved another album from that lineup but i think music wise it would have been all over the place. As for your question does he deserve more respect i think my answer would be no, he wasted a life, and a god given talent he could have given us so much more

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
For a young lad who was only a professional for 7 years, his output was phenomenal and varied, incoporating jazz, blues, rock and psychedelia, as well as being an excellent singer too. Unfortunately, he turned to the dark side of rock n roll and never came back. But for a fleeting period during the early seventies, Tommy Bolin had the world at his feet. He gets my respect.

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
Considering we have well over thirty official releases featuring Tommy Bolin now, I think we have enough evidence to say that he deserves respect. He also does get it from official sources like guitar teachers and the writers of all the guitar mags. He really only fails to get it from people who judge him on his Blackmorelessness, and of course from folks who own LCIJ and apparently little else.
He would get my respect based on "Teaser" and "Spectrum" alone - but then you add "Zephyr: Live" and "TB and Friends: Ebbets Field 1974" and "Days May Come" and "Mind Transplant" and "Miami" and "Bang," and you have someone with a serious body of work to analyze and learn from. Jim S

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
To answer your question:
Of course he deserves more respect, he did some outstanding things on several albums, but right now I'm listening to the rehearsel/jam track Dance To The Rock 'n Roll and to be honest: it's sooooooo boring what he plays there. It's very uninspired and non-original. It's getting more boring every minute he plays it. (Can't say this about Jon)
But I know he did some very great things as well. I'm not a Bolin fan, but I do like Teaser, CTTB and I really love his version with DP in Japan of Wild Dogs. The solo represents all kind of emotions of what Tommy has been through those days.

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
The problem is that Tommy had ONE chance as a permanent member of a well-known group and failed (especially live there were some sad and uninspired nights). His solo career was just going, so he hasn't have the chance to proof how good he was. Fortunately there are still enough recordings with him to put him into a better light than he was after the Deep Purpe desaster... Teaser and the stuff with Energy as well as his work with Billy Cobham are much better than what he played on CTTB.

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
Tommy Bolin would have been the American Jeff Beck, which is the highest honor of order.
I can only imagine what an awesome player he would be today had not snuffed himself out.

Re: Do Tommy Bolin still deserve more respect?
Yeah, he absolutly does!! As you say, Atle, CTTB relly grows on you and Bolin is a really good guitarist. But, and there is a but, his (and Hughes) drug habbits screwed up Deep Purple! He couldn't even play some gigs because of it and you can't do like that if you are to play in one of the biggest rock bands in the world. And, let's face it, he aren't as good as Ritchie but he's still good and you can't demand that a guitarplayer should be as good as Ritchie because there are nobody who is, you know. He did do some great work though. I myself love the version of Wild Dogs from LCIJ.
