Or alternatively you could drop your G to F#, capo the third fret and hey presto, the same tuning as the common Renaissance period 6-Course lute.
It obviously sounds a bit better on a nylon string guitar but you can then play lute music, you'll just have to learn how to read lute tablature. The most widely used form is the French tablature, which is very similar to guitar tab with letters used to represent the fret positions instead of numbers. There's also German tablature, which is unnecessarily complicated and an absolute pain in the arse to read.
