How to play the Hammond Organ!
To all wannabee keyboard players.....
Buy, beg, borrow or steal a copy of Jon Lord with The Hoochie Coochie Men - Live at the Basement. Watch it closely.....
then weep at your own inadequacies....
Just got a copy of this, the man is a colossus!

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
I saw it, and I know what you mean.
It is both an inspiring and defeating experience all in the same.
Part of me boldly says, "!@#$...I could do what he does..." as I attempt to cop his fingerings advancing the DVD player one frame at a time; and the other part of me says, "!@#$...who am I fooling? I ought to put my Hammond on ebay tomorrow, and let someone who really deserves to own it have a crack at it...I'm not worthy of such a fine instrument."
We musicians amature or otherwise are our own worst critics. We always will be.
But in all seriousness, that was a fabulous video. By the way, could you tell what key he was playing Green Onions in? I think his fingering was in the key of D, but I'm not 100% sure. I know Booker T and the MG's originally did it in F.

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
Not sure about the key, it's difficult to tell from Jon's huge hands - I've shaken them and they are huge!
I've always played it in C - I think a drummer told me that was the key he played it in
I'm still drooling over it...

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
I got my copy via play.com - usually fairly competitive for £15 (which is about $27 on current exchange rates)that's slightly less than usual UK retail prices.
I don't know what their shipping costs to the US are but, as to whether i'ts worth it, I thought so but then again I'm a big fan and it does provide an insight into Jon's approach to music, his thoughts on leaving Purple and you get a lot of coverage on the Concerto.
The choice is yours, as the saying goes.

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
Yes, Gillan's micstand, I think the aggregious price, though proposterous, is worth it.
It gives some real insight into his playing and finger technique. For example in "Strange Brew" notice that JL gets a nice wah-wah effect on the organ by holding down chords with the right hand, while toggling back and forth on the reverse color preset keys with his left hand. I would personally have never thought of doing that until I saw him do it, so right there the instructional value is worth the $30+ price tag.
The last time I inquired about the cost of Hammond organ lessons here in the Bay Area, a guy in Richmond, CA with excellent gospel organ technique was charging $50 per half hour! If I can take tidbits off a DVD using good camera angles, I figure I'm well ahead of the game, and that show was way longer than a half hour, so definitely my money's worth for the way I'm using the DVD.
By the way, I played along with "Green Onions" from the HCM DVD on my Hammond and it IS in the key of D. My guess is that was done for the harmonica player's benefit.

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
You would love some of my dvd software programs,I can make a dvd go in slow and fast speeds while the music is still understandable, what I mean is no chipmonks effect, you can understand everything yet it will play at slow speeds making you able to hack every lick.
Pretty amazing stuff and a music hacks dream.I haven't seen one home theatre model with this sort of capability.

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
Larry,
Sounds like the software I would need for the entire Made In Japan album.

Re: How to play the Hammond Organ!
It plays audio only as well,I like the video factor though cause you can see every
lick frame by frame without being annoyed by the sound of slow speed because it still sounds proper for some reason, sort of hard to fully explain I guess.
