When you gig....which do you prefer to play?
Both have their pros and cons.
What do you think is an ideal gig temperature?
50's, 60's, 70's (farenheight)?
Most folks agree that cold stages are less hard on equipment, but too cold and the fingers don't want to move, so there's give and take.
I find the crowd is more into it, if they can sit comfortably, and it usually takes temps at least >65-degreess to accomplish that, but much over 85 or 90, and it just becomes a holy hell for everyone involved. Those type gigs are just no fun at all.
So what do you think?

Re: When you gig....which do you prefer to play?
Having just played a Charity show outdoors I can advise that playing in a marquee in November in the North of England is not for the faint hearted.
Indoors until I've thawed out a little.
Don't suppose that happens in California

I've never gigged outdoors, only at pubs on Friday nights

Re: When you gig....which do you prefer to play?
DEFINITELY indoors! The only outdoor gigs I've played have been in the warmer weather, but I'm deathly afraid of bees! At one gig, inbetween songs, I took off running when I saw a bee coming towards me. Only my amp cord stopped me!
I used to have a problem with indoor gigs being too smoky, but with the recent indoor smoking ban in New York, that's not a problem any more. The only problem I have right now is that those lights are so darned hot! But I guess you'd have to deal with that outdoors as well.

Re: When you gig....which do you prefer to play?
Jenny,
Afraid of Bees? I'm actually afraid of bee-flats. That's why I run when I see sax players coming!
No seriously, I forget if I asked you this question already, but where in Upstate New York are you? My family lived in Poughkeepsie when I was very, very young. I don't remember it at the time, though I do remember going back to visit when I was 12.
People from Syracuse scoff at me when I call Poughkeepsie/Hudson Valley, "upstate", but compared to Staten Island, well...I guess it would be upstate.

LOL!
I'm from the Syracuse area. I guess Poughkeepsie is kind of upstate - but then again, to people who live in the city, Scarsdale is upstate! Haven't been down to that area for quite a while now - I've only gone as far as the Catskills lately (my family has a house there).

The best place to place to play or hear live music has to be an atmospheric pub. No matter how drunk you get, everybody else is invariably drunker and can't tell how bad you're playing as you begin to slide down the wall.

Open air gigs can be great, if weather is good. But if it is just raining the whole time and if it is cold, the mood in the crowd is not too good and it is hard to play, too. Soundwise indoor gigs are better anyway...

We've played the Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie a few times (once opening for Mountain). It's a great venue, and a fun (LOUD) place to play.
I generally prefer indoor gigs, the sound is just better, to my ears!

Re: When you gig....which do you prefer to play?
For a while once, we used a farm for rehearsing. It was ok in the summer, but in the winter it got so cold that none of the gear would work properly.
I used to play my keys with gloves on!! not easy I can tell you!
