Ergonomically, the "layout" of the CX-3's buttons is much more "Hammondesque" than the VK-7, which just seemed to "glop" them on the keyboard anywhichway. My sense is that Korg has been doing organ longer than Roland, and therefore just has a better sense of how to design a layout. The worst layout related feature of the VK has to be the harmonic percussion controls being on the left side instead of the right. As well as the lack of a C1-C2-C3, V1-V2-V3 six-way knob. The very idea of having to go into the edit menu to alter something that is a realtime control knob on a Hammond, just irks the hell out of me. Roland invested how many $'s to release the best development in organ synth technology in 1997, yet they didn't think about the buttons. Too bad. My only complaint about the CX-3 is the price, the fact that if I were to spend the money to get it, I probably couldn't get $500 for the VK at this point if I were to try and sell it, and even with the CX, it's STILL a one tier keyboard. Also, the min-max contrasts in the reverb and overdrive are so narrow (subtle) on the CX, that I can barely tell the difference. Whereas on the VK, min--> max is so grossly exaggerated (even to a fault), that I can get just the sound I'm looking for. At times, it might sound fake if I take an effect to the extreme, but I'd rather be able to take an effect too far, and then taper it back, than not be able to take it out far enough. You know what I mean? The CX is an excellent board, and the next logical answer that Korg came up with to fight back against Roland. You made a wise decision if you were unhappy with the Roland. Best part of the CX, is two banks of drawbars instead of just one. Really makes that thing look like a real B3. Now if you were to make a set of wooden legs and varnish them the same color as the CX-3, everyone would think you've got a real B3. Hey, I just found your next garage project for you, given that you've got the time. Cheers!nondisclosed_email@example.com (B3Burner)Sat, 01 Nov 2003 01:24:07 +0000 Re: Any other keyboard players use a Roland VK-7?https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p114902,from=rss#post114902https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p114902,from=rss#post114902Hi there B3b I own the Vk-7 for aprox. 4 years now but I don't use it much these days. I bought it only for the 'handyness' ( is that a word ? ) for gigs with my blues / swing band in small bars with stages about the size of at poststamp ... The VK-7 is not that bad at all ... I just can't help to feel more 'limited' in both sound and style when I play it. The various 'keyboard' functions has also become a kinda 'turn off' thing to me. IMO those damn buttons don't belong there when I try to capture 'that organ mood' you know. When the Korg Cx-3 came I bought that for the very same reasons, and with my motionsound Pro-3t+lowpro I can get a sound very close indeed to my Hammond / Leslie setup ! The sound is not quite '3dimensionel' but close .. If you like the Vk-7 you'll LOVE the Cx-3 nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ramshackle Man)Fri, 31 Oct 2003 13:13:39 +0000 Re: Any other keyboard players use a Roland VK-7?https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p114901,from=rss#post114901https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p114901,from=rss#post114901Not got one myself but have discussed it with another keyboard player who raved about his. I've been toying with the idea of a Hammond XK2. Example sounds from their website seemed quite favourable even using the digital "leslie" effects rather than the real thing. This seems an easier option for those of us without the benefits of 3 roadies and a huge truck nondisclosed_email@example.com (happy hammond)Fri, 31 Oct 2003 12:46:58 +0000 Any other keyboard players use a Roland VK-7?https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p114900,from=rss#post114900https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p114900,from=rss#post114900This has been my small keyboard of choice since February 1999. Moving the Hammond Chop (even chopped it's 300+ lbs.) is not always a viable option. Anyone else have stories to tell of the VK-7? An amazing little 35 pound digital Hammond clone, which was the talk of the town when it first came out in 1997. The only thing I'm sorry it's missing, is more decent e. piano voices, a clav., and an acoustic piano voice. But it's real time drawbar controllers are out of this world. My Hammond technique would be the shits if I hadn't practiced on the VK first. I'm greatful I have it...anyone else?nondisclosed_email@example.com (B3Burner)Fri, 31 Oct 2003 06:25:29 +0000
