Re: Musicians and Instruments
Wow, this is old, surprised to see it dredged back up. But anyway...
It's been a rather long time since I first contributed to this thread but between then and now I've made a commitment to playing the piano properly, taken up the flute and have found a new consuming passion in the violin. My then primary instrument was even then beginning to bore me and I'm, (temporarily at least), no longer playing the guitar.

I am (kind of) in a band. I play bass in a Blues Brothers tribute band in Central New York. We're on an extended hiatus right now - lots of stuff going on in our "normal" lives that is pre-empting the band.
In the past, we played at some local bars and private parties. We had a great chance last year to play at the local Blues Fest, but it fell through when the management eliminated the second stage, where we were pretty well set to play. Don't know if it will happen this year, with the state of everything else. Still a chance, though!
As far as what I play, I mainly play the electric bass, my main instrument being a Rickenbacker with a Fender P as my backup. I also play a little piano and a very little guitar. I played classical bass for several years, but got burned out on it and now just play for fun. I've been experimenting with different strings lately, and found that the Rickenbacker gets a really great sound when you string it with flatwound strings and use the standard input jack.
As far as influences, Roger is a strong influence on my current style of playing. I also count Geezer Butler, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and Ian Hill among my major influences. Duck Dunn is the main influence on what my current band plays, as we are a Blues Brothers tribute band!

Geezer Butler is a great bassist, loads of energy and action, pure theatre to watch. Seen him live many times in the 70's and he was way more entertaining than Tony Iommi or even mad Ozzy. I also admire Stanley Clarke,, his skill is immense he's kind of technically to the bass what Ritchie Blackmore is to the guitar.....i.e. an amazing player!

I'm interested to know who does what, where !
And what about you, BTN? You asked the question but haven't told us about your musical endeavours.

Re: Musicians and Instruments
Keyboards here been playing for 13 years
In a band
Jon is a huge influence on my playing I love the sound of a hammond (i have an old yamaha psr 730 board that does a good job replicating it), as is Mr. Airey
I also play guitar and slide guitar, only in open tunings. ritchie has influenced some of my stuff, mainly riff wise.

Re: Musicians and Instruments
Ahhh, another Hammond fan!!!
Good to see ya' Hammondfreak.
I've a chopped BV (late 40's predecessor to the B-3), with a Leslie 45 and 125.
Once in awhile it's fun to run the Hammond thru a stationary speaker amp, like a Fender or a Marshall, just to get that gritty Jon Lord 1970 to 1972 sound, but most of the time I like it straight and mellow through a Leslie....sorta' blues and late 60's sounding.
Lately, I've been more into trying to get my piano and Rhodes electric piano voices up to snuff, and have been having fun with 70's R&B/Funk as a result.
My latest band project is an 80's dance band, with all that synth strings and brass stuff. Not my favorite kind of music to play, but it's the kind that is lately getting me hired, so I try not to complain.
I have an old Roland Juno 2 that I will have to dust off and fix the key contacts on, as this will be my choice board for doing our Depeche Mode, and Bananaramma stuff, but putting retro-pop stuff aside, Deep Purple and the mighty grinding B-3, will always be my favorite.

Re: Musicians and Instruments
Three Strats with Adder Plus pickups (Best I've ever used and I've tried tons over the years.) One Takamine and one Ovation. Marshall AVT50, Marshall VS30 (practice amp??). Boss GT-3 and a few single pedals. Slides, cans, bottles, shoes, floors, music stands, mic stands, drummers using his/her sticks, and assorted other dumb/silly things (that last bit does not refer to drummers ).
Ritchie is a big influence for me but so is King, Santana, SRV, Segovia, Esteban (corny I know), Cray, Guy, (and without sounding 'high brow'), Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, Segovia, Vivaldi, Pearlman (there is a great musician), and others many of which are friends.

Re: Musicians and Instruments
Two acoustics, one mandolin, and an (technically unaltered) Strat:
I don't play in any band, only at home, for my neighbours who seem to enjoy it very much. (They keep joining in by banging on the walls! They are very musical.)
