Musicians and Instruments

How many people who post on this board are musicians?
Are you in a band ?
What instruments do you play?
What influence does Ritchie et al have on what you or your band play ?

I'm interested to know who does what, where !

I don't play in a band, just for my own amusement. emoticon

I'm primarily a guitarist, more acoustic than electric nowadays, and hugely influenced by Ritchie's work in Blackmore's Night which lead me to explore other great acoustic guitarists, (as well as begin a fascination with trills emoticon ), I used to think an acoustic was something to bash a few chords out on before you got an electric and really learned how to play but now my stance is reversed.

I also doodle around on the harmonica and play a bit of piano but not really enough to say that I can play it with a straight face. When I was about 7 I played the recorder and was quite good at it until I abandoned it for the clarinet, which was a huge mistake because I had to learn on a full-size instrument that was just too big for me to play properly at the time because it was not only quite unwieldy to hold but I had trouble getting my little fingers to cover the what seemed like enormous holes and it required quite a substantial amount of air, (more than I could consistently manage), to get it to make a sound properly and I wasn't really up to that so I dropped it after a few months and didn't touch another instrument until I took up the guitar at 15.

As an interesting postscript, I'm currently building two guitars from scratch as part of a very long, taxing project that's ended costing a lot more than I thought it would but the end is in sight now and I'm incorporating a flat top mandolin and a six-course lute into it, they should all be finished by January or February next year if all goes well.

Play guitar in a band. Ritchie has some influence on what I play, because I listened to his music a lot over the years, but there are also other guitar players that influenced me. I never wanted just to play in a determined style.

We're more playing progressive rock things than hard rock, so our sound is all in all not influenced too much by Ritchie...

Any sound clips that we could listen to?

Re: Musicians and Instruments

I've been playing guitar for the last 23 years, currently I'm playing in a Who tribute band here in Connecticut called "Odds & Sods" (www.oddsandsods.org).
 My influences:
Rock:
Blackmore
Trower
Morse

Blues:
F. King
A. King
Otis Rush

For the Who band I'm using a Townshend SG, and 2 late model Les Paul Standards (sometimes a black Schecter Tele when we do our '82 set) into a full 50 Hiwatt stack. For the other fun stuff, I have a gaggle o' strats and a '72 ES335.

I'm playing guitar, not in a band cos I don't know anybody to start one with but it would be great fun. My main influences are Blackers, Micky Moody, Pete Townsend and Hendrix. I mainly play electric guitar, but every now and then I play my old acoustic aswell. Blackers was the one who got me into electric guitar playing in the first place, when I watched Cal Jam on VHS for the first time. Before that I took classical lessons for about 7 years and it had begun to be boring when I saw Cal Jam and pick up the electric.

I've been playing keyboards in bands off & on for more years than I care to remember!

I'm currently using a KorgCX3 and a Yamaha PSR8000 for stage work with a Roland and a couple of other Yamaha boards for my little home studio.

You can check the band out at Hard Shoulder Blues Band it's pretty much blues a bit like Jon Lord's stint with Hoochie Coochie Men a few years ago. There's no sound links on yet but that's next.

Can't say that RB influences how I play but Jon certainly has.

Should I retire and go on the road with an orchestra?

I've got two hands, I can play that - Vic Savage, Spinal Tap.

I played the recorder untill I was about 20 years old. School and church concerts. I was in a group for about 6 months, playing folk music. I found it boring, and not worth the energy.
Likewise I learned to play the piano when I was a kid. Fur Elise, with full pedal work, all self taught, because my piano teacher wouldn´t help me.

I play guitar mainly. Ritchie is a gigantic influence on me, I don't go a day without listening to one of his songs. The CIT solo was the reason I really started to take guitar seriously, because it was just so damn good.

This is my only guitar right now. I need a strat if anyone has got too many emoticon
