Yep - I would agree. I often find myself reverting to tried a tested runs when improvising in keys I don't often play in.
I think JL alluded to it on the Making of Machine Head DVD if he doesn't get a solo off after a couple of go's he leaves it because you end up repeating the same phrases which is copying not improvising.
My band just played a couple of shows with a "guest" drummer - our own was out of action - he had a completely different style, one that was much more comfortable to both me and our bass player and, when our guitarist broke a string he was able to change it whilst I did an extended solo spot with bass & drum accompaniment and was able to expand on what I normally do knowing I could rely on the other guys to keep things together.
I think we need a new drummer !
