Wakeman on Lord
Rick Wakeman on his planet rock show this morning rated Hush as one of if not the best organ lead rock records ever,he also said that mk1 was his favourite lineup and shades was one of his all time fave albums...

I also heard Rick saying this. Rick's show is good. Some good jokes as well

Re: Wakeman on Lord
Very cool of Rick to say...and it's always been in my top five rock organ solos of all time...no kidding,it's fabulous.
A song within a song,almost.

Re: Wakeman on Lord
If it weren't for the Hush organ solo, I probably would have never had an interest in Deep Purple, nor the Hammond organ.
I'd probably still be listening to Boy George, Madonna, and Gloria Gaynor.
I'm dead serious and I kid you not!!!
I heard Hush for the first time in July 1982, and it literally set my head on fire (okay-- figuratively speaking).
Nothing else popular that summer could compete with it in my mind. But then again, look at what was popular back in the summer of 1982:
"Abracadabra" by Steve Miller,
"Rosanna" by Toto
"Jack and Dianne" by John (Don't Call Me Cougar) Melloncamp
When you spend your whole childhood listening to substandard music, and then suddenly get awoken from the dead with a song like HUSH, it tends to hit you like a ton of bricks. So it did for me.
I vividly remember thinking to myself, "how do I make my mom's spinet piano in the livingroom sound that way?
The answer? I couldn't!!!!

Re: Wakeman on Lord
If memory serves, weren't there rumors/stories/actual discussions regarding a sort of "all star keyboard" project that was to involve Jon Lord, Keith Emerson + Rick Wakeman back in the early '70s, but subsequent events & commitments kept it from ever becoming a reality?
Damn...toss say, Ken Hensley & Ray Manzarek into that mix and have a 5 man keyboard jam !

He's consistent too. In an Observer newspaper supplement that asked stars to name their top ten albums, Rick put down Shades.

That's for sure! As well, My epiphany came through the first Purple song I've ever listened to, the Made in Europe's You Fool No One (Jon's apocalyptical intro)...From then on, I got bad wax washed from my ears, and the 'ton of bricks'just fell from the skies, right on my head, as his Hammond touched the ground!...not to mean the soulspinnin'sound he poured from that Ring Modulator craft!
Love that guy! I would sell my pancreas to have him as a teacher!
PS: I beg you pardon for my poor English, since I'm Brazilian, ok?

Re: Wakeman on Lord
I can relate, it was the break in Fireball that did it for me, it just changed my musical taste somehow, I'm just glad it wasn't done by a flash in the pan, there would be nothing left to dish out, so to speak.
I'll agree that for Jon, two of his biggest moments, are during "Hush, and "YFNO" from "MIE" definetly.
Your English is great man, no sweat.
