PAL BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert

As I was (abortively) ordering Live In Paris from Amazon UK I noted that they claimed to have Paice Ashton Lord BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert, and I impulsively pressed "buy now".

The delays on Live In Paris meant I ended up cancelling it and adding Burn and Beyond the Notes; so the PAL disc came first, followed a week or so later by the others.

(I have a Japanese version of Malice In Wonderland, and haven't invested in the newer Purple version with the extra tracks.)

As I run PAL live through for about the tenth time in two weeks, I'm wondering why I had previously not tried to get it. I reckon many of these versions stomp on the album cuts, and the recording has a wonderful warmth to it.

Any other comments? How many of you have this?

I got it from Huuto.net (the Finnish equivalent for eBay) in the spring. I hadn't even seen this one before. It's the only PAL record I own and I enjoy it hugely.

The quality of the recording is amazing.

Yes, it was a fine band, one of my favourite DP offsprings. Now let's have that promised live DVD, please. emoticon

I have to tell you guys,I've seen the "Lifespan" video footage that was talked about putting out on DVD, and it is very interesting, narrated by Mr.Lord, and contains rehearsal footage,I also seem to remember some auditions,or atleast Jon speaking on the subject of it,it was around 1982 that I watched this by way of channel surfing,as soon as they announced they would be airing some Purple stuff,I immediately warmed up the vcr,it was the Beat Club videos, managed to capture them, but wish I had gotten the " PAL Lifespan",it aired on an old show titled 'Night Flight",and coincedently, earlier that same night, the Rainbow San Antonio gig was aired on MTV...ah what a memorable evening that was!
The PAL footage is very worthy of releasing! emoticon

I bought the "PAL BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert" just a month ago. It is very enjoyable.

If you appreciate Tony Ashton, I can suggest the "Ashton, Gardner & Dyke - Let it roll" a live album recently released by Purple Records.

I was reading in Darker in Blue that the Tony Ashton Benefit "Endangered Species" concert may well be released soon (sometime anyway)

What was the PAL lineup that night and what songs did they play?

Re: PAL BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert

The band was essentially Ian Paice (dr), Jon Lord (key) and Bernie Marsden ( guit / lead voc ) supported by Neil Murray on bass. ( Apparently original basist Paul Martinez was among the guests that night but had not been invited to participate in the mini-PAL reunion ). Tony Ashton had not rehearsed with the guys - I think it was intended as a surprise for him - so, while he sat in on keys and sang along with a few bits, he wasn't really fully involved. I think Laurie Weisman ( is that his name? ) the sometime Wishbone Ash guitarist joined them for the last number. They also had the original backing girls and some of the guys in the brass section including Howie Casey.

As far as I can recall they played: Ghost Story, Sneaky Private Lee and the Resurrection Shuffle.

I shouted for Silas and Jerome ( of course ) but Lordy turned round and said "that's too difficult"!!

The Endangered Species show is nearly completed -the 5.1 audio mix by Steve Scanlon is incredible. Will have more info in next 2-3 weeks with respect to release dates for this and the PAL DVD -with concert and LIFESPAN . Cheers Drew

Drew,

Can't wait for both of these two releases. Any thoughts on likely release dates? Also has Jon been involved in either?

Cheers

Silas
