Re: Rocking and Tipping the Organ

I can remember an interview with Jon Lord somewhere when he explains about rocking the Hammond. He said there is actually a good balancing/ pivot point that makes it easier to rock it.
For me with Deep Purple, Jon Lord was every bit the stage presence that Blackmore was. I'll never forget my 1st DP concert with MKIV. Jon Lord was such a mysterious and forboding presence behind his Hammond, wearing those sunglasses and a psychotic, mad scientist grin while rockin the Hammond back & forth. During the intro to Lazy when he gets those ghastly noises out of it while smoke pours out the open back is just an incredible sight to behold. My wife who is kind of on the outside when it comes to who's is who in DP, other than Blackmore, once told me after a DP show that the organist is the only one she has seen that could give Blackmore a run for his money on stage. She was talking in terms of his charisma as well as his soloing factor.
Unfortunately, the last time we saw DP together, she said something was missing and even asked me if it was the same organist (it was, with gray hair and a silly ponytail). I've said this before that during the MK-Morse shows, Lord seems to be backing off so as not to blow the rest of the band away, which, without Ritchie there, he is certainly more than capable of doing. The 1st hint of this is his alsmost note for note solo to HS and the same note for note solo to Lazy from Machine Head. He didn't seem to be expanding or taking chances and was content to play it safe. I also hated when they put him near the back next to Ian Paice. It just didn't look or feel right.

Re: Rocking and Tipping the Organ

Low and behold,I happen to have recently obtained a video of the RCMH NYC concert Brian,it's a very shaky audience job, done by the same guy who did the recent Beacon shows, the film quality is very clear though, and the sound is excellent, but I have to say that Jon didn't give Ritchie a run for his money that night,in fact Ritchie didn't even give himself a run for his money. emoticon
The show was extremely average,I know it's a playback and thats not always representitive to the real thing, but in this case I'd say thats due to the excitement of being there.(which you were)
The quality of performance is about as good as the Ostrava show,no better,no worse, but Ian Paice didn't play as well.

If you are talking about the Slaves and Masters tour, the only show I saw on that tour was at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia. That's the one where my wife was duly impressed with Jon Lord. She had seen DP on the first PS tour and never said a word about anyones performance. She had also accompanied me on Rainbows SBTE show at MSG and knew what a force RB could be, but she really hadn't understood my fixation on Blackmore until she saw Blackmores Night. I had a co-worker at the time of the S&M tour who's brother went to NYC for a show, but I could have sworn it was at the Beacon Theatre, but that was many years ago and I must be wrong if you have one from RCMH.
Anyway, even an average show from Blackmore, based on the BFS (Blackmore Factor Scale) beats anybody's best show for me.
I've seen Blackmore two nights in a row many times and have seen the extremes. Two shows at the same Tower Theatre for the DTC tour was such a case. The first night was the absolute best I have ever seen him play and my brother, friend (same guy I have seen DP with many times) and myself were just simply in awe that night and just kept looking at each other shaking our heads and sometimes breaking out in fits of laughter in amazement. We were so taken by that performance that we went back the next night and paid out of our asses from a scalper. Ritchies sound was fucked up and he spent most of the night with his back turned to the crowd and several times stopped mid-solo and cupped his ears while screaming at the tech's. However, that first night was worth any of the sub-Blackmore Factor performances that I may have seen.
Like my oil painting friend Bob Ross used to say "there are no mistakes..just happy accidents."

You like Bob Ross sr,and jr? emoticon
The show I have is RCMH,there is footage of the marquee and people standing around outside.
I thought you had mentioned being there,I must have it mixed up with mkIV or something.
Tthey may have played the Beacon as well,
check Nigels diary,I'm sure his east coast dates are atleast accurate, but his northwest dates aren't,although they didn't play up here on that tour, but you know what I mean, whether you care or not.
I'm going to check into another one from Auburn Hills Mich.
(S&M tour,I hope it's better)
The DTC tour was one ass kicking tour,I saw him literally whipe the floor up with
Pat Travers, couldn't believe my eyes. emoticon

I've only seen Jr once many years ago and of course haven't seen any of Sr's shows in a long time. I used to oil paint in High School but it was always so painstaking I gave it up. Then I saw Bob with his fancy tricks and gave it a try. With my imagination and Bobs style I've come up with a few paintings that I'm quite proud of and they can be done in no time.

Yeah you're thinking of my first concert there which was MKIV.

Even that radio boot from the Orpheum (Can't Happen Here was from Nassau Colliseum which I also attended)doesn't do that tour justice. I taped the first night at the Tower from the second row.
A story about the Nassau show. I was sitting in the back of my buddies van, which had the 1st RBR and Rising covers painted on the sides done by me. We were sitting in traffic on the Parkway leading to the Colliseum on Long Island when I looked out the back window to see a cloud of dust fast approaching on the shoulder lane. I stopped what I was doing (rolling something or another emoticon )and became fixed on the dust cloud. When it got closer I had a good look at the driver of this black Porsche as it sped passed. Need I say more?

Yes I airbrushed it.
No pictures..sorry. Never even thought about it until after the van was long gone. I didn't know he was selling it until after it was gone.
Yes it was RB in the car on the way to the show in a bit of a hurry.

I once took an airbrush class,I still have poor technique though,I should have taken some more classes,it's a very fine art.
Too bad about the van.

True, but he'd wear them 19 out of 20 times. There's just something odd about being fan of the man and not really seing his face during a great deal of his career. (Most Whitesnake/later DP days.) A mystery man indeed. Image
