Jon's departure from Deep Purple
When did Jon decide to leave Deep Purple , and what were the circumstances leading up to his departure from the band?

I recommend that you buy the 'Jon Lord With Pictures' DVD. Watch, listen, learn.............. and enjoy.

Re: Jon's departure from Deep Purple
Okay, so much for the sales pitch. Good job, Nogel!
Anyway, I understand Lord was just tiring of the constant touring, wanted to pursue other musical interests and coupled with the knee injury he suffered, all led to the ultimate decision to retire (for most intents + purposes) from the rock scene. I think he was considering it as far back as the mid- to late 90s, I heard.
But get the dvd, anyway...I may have heard wrong or misunderstood what I heard and or read.

Re: Jon's departure from Deep Purple
Wasn't the main reason for his departure that he was tired of the heavy touring schedual???

Re: Jon's departure from Deep Purple
I believe it was a combo. of: One, steering away from heavy touring; two, a concerted move to want to move away from rock and more toward classical; and thirdly, to compose and let others play HIS music, instead of him always being the player.
Though from what I hear, his schedule can be just as hectic today, and the deadlines just as dicey, but at least now, it's on HIS terms.

What knee injury was that?

Re: Jon's departure from Deep Purple
Ian Gillan's promises were not a lie. It was what he truly believed at the time and it was what I was trying desperately to make happen. Check yr facts before you cast aspersions on a good mans character.

Re: Jon's departure from Deep Purple
The way that i understood Jons "holiday" was that he needed an operation on his knee and that his recuperation took a little longer than was at first anticipated, and that was the reason for the extention of him being away from the band.Iam sure that Don's performance at that time helped to make Jon's decision just a little easier to make, as i am sure that it must help to know that you are leaving your "friends" with such a capable replacement. The dvd is quite enlightening on the subject and i seem to recollect information being posted on the purple websites as it was known at that time
