Jon's Role In Whitesnake
In Deep Purple, Jon was a duel lead instrument player with all of the band's guitarists. In Whitesnake, did he play lead like he did in Deep Purple or was he relegated to more of a background position and the lead spots were taken by Moody and Marsden? Also, what were the main guitar roles that Mick and Bernie fill?

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
In all fairness, I should probably listen to my one and only Whitesnake album again before answering this. And I don't even remember the name of the album! (And am too lazy to get up, walk into the livingroom to check! )
As I recall, he had no real special role in that band...none that makes me stop dead in my tracks and say, "Damn Skippy! Would ya' dun' listen to what that dude's doin' on dat dare orgun?!!"
I was never really satisfied with most of Jon's work past the BURN album, up until the release of PERFECT STRANGLERS.

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
There are many Whitesnake songs that have ONLY an organ solo and did lots of great intros. Live he soloed often for the quarter of an hour and he was never low in the mix. Whitesnake wouldn´t have been the same with the organ only be an backup instrument. Later it was replaced by keyboards(no organ anymore) and they were only backup then, and then WS weren´t the same anymore.
But with Lord WS was a fantastic band.

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
Lord was certainly an integral part of Whitesnake - from both creative + results perspectives - from the time he joined in 1978 'til the day he left. The only real difference between his tenures with Purple + Whitesnake as fas as I could tell were from the "employer-employee" perspective. In Purple he was an employer, in Whitesnake an employee. A valued employee, but employee nonetheless.

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
Well, from what Milan said two posts above, I guess I just so happen to own the wrong WS album. Time to hunt around for some of the older ones.

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
Just thought I'd take the opportunity to suggest some "early" Whitesnake albums to ya, John:
"Trouble"
"Love Hunter"
"Ready An' Willing"
"Come An' Get It"
"Saints An' Sinners"
"Slide It In"
Just out of curiosity - what's the one Whitesnake album you do have?

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
When asked : what's your contribution to DP come back, DC answered " Jon Lord !"
More seriously, it's known John Sykes wanted the keyboards to be in the backgrounds, so I think his days in WS were close to the end

Re: Jon's Role In Whitesnake
I'm not sure if Lord ever really gave any extensive commentary about his leaving Whitesnake,or any real problems in the band besides the basic ennui/antagonism/jealousies that are almost inevitable after 5 or 6 years working and touring together. He once stated he'd made the decision before the final go-ahead for the 1984 Deep Purple reunion was done. I seem to recall Lord saying Coverdale and he had agreed that Lord would be leaving Whitesnake and Coverdale asked Lord to stay for one final (Japanese?) tour. When that was done, the Deep Purple thing was reality...and Lord had always made it pretty plain that he wished to close out his career as a rock musician in the role of Deep Purple's keyboardist. So it was nice to see that sometimes the best sort of people actually get what they wish for and so richly deserve.

Jon's role (during his holiday) in Whitesnake ? Wear dark glasses and look mean into the camera.
