Re: Hoochie Coochie Men + Lord

As I said above, I don't like it.

Apart from the lyrics, the version lacks everything that made the song so beautiful.

I'll learn to tolerate just about anybody's version of any song (presuming they're singing within the context of their own artistic limitations).... [Translated into plain english: That they can sing the damned song without sounding like sh**].

In his own unique way, Mr. Barnes met this criteria. Do I think it's the best version I ever heard? No.

I don't even like it when Gillan sings it live.

My favorite was the original studio mix from Montreux in Dec. 1971, that got lopped onto the Making of Machine Head DVD.

I generally prefer to hear live versions of instrument solos, but studio versions of vocals.

Re: Hoochie Coochie Men + Lord

It was the b-side of the single Never Before,I first heard it in 1979 when I got my first taste of it,I was in heaven.
This was before I had become fully Gillanized though,it wasn't so much the singing for me,it was the sweet guitar playing weeping through the song that I love so much.
I then got into Lord,Gillan was the hardest member of the band for me to praise, but praise I did, once I got it. emoticon
Barnsey is like a second rate Brian Johnson or something to me,I can tolerate him,but he's definitly a grower,
he doesn't ruin the song though.

Re Barnes WABMC

I don't feel I missed anything seeing the Melbourne show without Barnes. Agree that it's a take it or leave it version.

He's also a bit like Dan McCafferty from Nazareth.

I prefere IG doing WABMC by a mile and the Bombay Calling version is just heavenly to me.
I think that this Purple tune wasn't THE thing to do for them, they should have chosen another one.

Well, concerning J.Barnes, how about Sail Away from Burn, something from Stormbringer,or something Purple related.
I just think that WABMC is too balladish for it.

Great idea but is Barnsey the soulful type?
If he is,I'd say much more in the Hughes vein than Coverdale,I think he is more of a shouter than anything, thats the beauty of Gillan that some often don't see,he can sing wonderfully hard and wonderfully soft, why can't Coverdale fans believe this?
Is it that he doesn't sing softly often enough?
It's not his best attribute, but he can still do it with the best of them...
